Reason for leaving (public v. private sector)

Has anyone ever switched from the public sector to the private sector? For me this will be a return to the private sector. I work in the legal field.

One of my reasons for leaving (most would not be an appropriate topic for an interview) is that I felt that the work was more challenging in the private sector. The pace of work was more steady and there wasn't a lot of down time.

Do you think this will be an acceptable response?

Lurker here, and I am also considering leaving public work for private in the legal field.

I think your answer is spot-on, but I would also add that, at least where I am from, there is minimal opportunity for advancement/promotions. If you've done everything you can do aside from being the head boss, then I would throw that in there, too.

  • I'm possibly looking to do the same and that's very similar to what my answer would be!

I would expect possible follow up questions, though, around what did you do to keep yourself challenged and busy.

Thank you for reminding me! I actually have no room for advancement. I do not live in the state that I work and most of the time you are required to live in the state to get a promotion. I also couldn't get a promotion in a smaller firm, to my knowledge, but my current position doesn't allow for any additions to job duties. Whereas in the private sector, I will probably work with clients more, and if the attorney allows, legal research. I'm not even touching on my paralegal skills here and never will. We are viewed as secretaries ... actually more along the lines of the clerical staff that we do have in the office.

I'm not sure what needs to be "acceptable" about it?  People go back and forth between public and private sector all the time.  If you have a solid work history, just be honest about your reasons for leaving.  As long as you say it with tact, you should be fine.
