motivation needed: small house

We have a small house and have what seems like no real space to store stuff.

Motivate me and remind me how good it will feel to purge our crap so I can store my school stuff and our unused baby items.

I want to reclaim our dining room table from my school stuff but surrently have nowhere to put it.

I don't need extra comforters and sheets and random old clothes right? Whats the rule? If it hasn't been used in a year pitch it? LOL

I wish that I had someone in my life who would come and help use declutter and get rid of useless crap.

Re: motivation needed: small house

  • We just went through this, minus the baby stuff. Here's how we've kept it organized, (we have a small house too)  Going to a closet, and opening it and seeing it organized feels like going shopping every time, because all the clothes are folded in piles, like in a store.  It's fun now to open a closet and chose an outfit for the day, whereas before it was a nightmare and stress-inducing to even open the doors!
  • It is time for a yard sale.   You can get cold cash for things that you no longer want.  Is it fun to have extras of everything falling out of your closets to make your life more complicated?   Grab your best friends and host a yard sale to remove crap and catch up one sunny morning.
  • flylady.net has helped me in the past. She takes things slow as far as cleaning/purging. When we moved 6 months ago, a lot of our things went to a local goodwill. Part of the reason we let go of so many things was lack of space and also lack of use. I'd say if you haven't used it in a year, donate/toss. A great motivation for this is watching Hoarders. It makes me want to clean every time.

  • It's yard sale season! I'm currently in the process of (slowly) deep-cleaning and organizing my house. Getting rid of stuff is such a good feeling, especially when you don't have stuff everywhere. My mom is a pack rat, so I've always made a serious effort to cut down on clutter and keep things organized. We have a baby on the way, so I'm doubling my efforts these last few months.

  • Watch an episode of hoarders. It's good for 3 hours of cleaning.

  • I got it done, 3 bags later, 1 for goodwill and 2 for the trash. Most of the stuff was sorta junky that I was saving to put on the futon in the basement but I am thinking of getting rid of it whenever our roommate moves out since he is a smoker. (Though he smokes outside)

It felt good getting it done and now both DD#1 and #2's clothes can hang again on the rods. My table will be cleared tomorrow once I move the boxes to the shelves under the window. I will post a after picture when done. No way was I going to take a before picture... LOL

  • I have a small house, too. Our house is about 900 or so sq.ft. and there are 4 of us. I've been going through things and setting aside stuff for a garage sale, charity, or throwing away. It's mental baggage and you just need to get rid of it.

We have friends that just moved and it took them over 4 months to pack. It's just the 2 of them and they keep everything...along the lines of hoarders. They have been so stressed out and were fighting with eachother because of the amount of time that it took them to pack. I have no idea how 2 people have so much crap...

  • If you don't have a specific use for it, and if it doesn't bring you joy, get rid of it.  Don't keep anything out of guilt (little knick knacks that people buy as gifts).  Clothes, if they don't fit, get rid of them (unless they're too small and you're currently, actively losing weight, not a plan to next year or next week).

Get rid of anything ratty (you don't need 10 sheet sets when 7 of them are falling apart, I have 2 that I use most of the year, an extra for when it's super cold out (they're very fuzzy and warm) and for the longest time I only had 1 set.

IMO, if I can't find a place for it, it doesn't have a place in my home.

If you have a habit of hanging on to sentimental items, get a rubbermaid tote and put things in there, when it's full you have to find something to get rid of before you can add to it.  It doesn't matter how big or small you choose to buy, it's the fact that no matter what, your useless sentimental pieces that you can't stand to part with will be limited to 1 space that you allow yourself (DH and I actually share a medium sized tote).

Do you really need 12 large drinking glasses and 12 small drinking glasses?  Get rid of (or pack up) things in your cabinets that you don't use.  We rarely use the small gasses, I only have 2 coffee mugs accessible, etc.  If you clear your cabinets out, you can condense your kitchen and add a ton of storage.

DH and I lived in a 2BR 1BA 864sqft house before we moved to our current house.  I held onto everything in that house for a while.  When we were getting ready to move I got rid of so much stuff, we literally had to load the car around DS1 to go to Goodwill so we could even fit him in there.
