Hi all, I am a bay area native currently living in southern California. I've always wanted to eventually return to the bay and recently I got a job offer.
My dilemma is the housing prices. I will be working in the North Bay around wine country. So far it seems as if the only safe 3 bedroom rentals are around 2000-2300/mo. Does this sound right? Money will be a little tight until DH finds a job as well and I'm looking for something more affordable though that doesn?t seem possible.
Has anyone moved from a LCOL area to the bay? What are something?s you did to save or afford the horrendous housing costs?
Re: CP:Moving back to Norcal
That's definitely accurate rent for a 3 bedroom. What area are you looking at specifically? If you're working in Napa you may be able to rent in American Canyon or Vallejo for less than it would cost in Napa. But with that you'll be buying more gas, which is over $4 a gallon at most places in the North Bay right now.

that's about right for a 3 bdrm rental in a 'safe' area in the north bay. i pay slightly less than that in the east bay and commute to the north bay. no comment on what i spend in gas/tolls monthly but it's a sad fact of life in the bay area. cheaper housing = more $$ in gas.
the only way imo, you'll find something more affordable is if you go the eastern route (american canyon, northern vallejo, fairfield even) or the northern route (petaluma, rohnert park, santa rosa) but even then .. expect to pay in the $2k range for a house, $1500 range for 2 bdrm apt.
GL and welcome back !
We lived in Orange county which was also expensive but not as bad as the Bay Area. Currently we are bakersfield region....way cheaper than both places.
As a real estate agent, I say you can find some rentals a few hundred dollar cheaper, depending on the area. There are lots of private renters out there that are charging way less. If you want to tell me more specific, I might be able to ask some other agents if they have any avaibale rentals. you can email me at Longoriarealestate@gmail.com
