Anyone deliver at St. V's (repost from thebump)

Experiences?

I am having to deliver this baby there due to issues with the baby.  We will take a tour but not for another 4 weeks at my next appt and meet with the neonatologist and get to tour the NICU.

TIA

Re: Anyone deliver at St. V's (repost from thebump)

  • I delivered there in 2005 and 2007 and had great experiences both times, the nurses were wonderful.  I had very uneventful deliveries and healthy babies so I've never seen the NICU.

They are a teaching hospital though, so be sure to speak up on who exactly you want doing your IV and epidural (if you go that route) and all that.  I was asked if a resident could put in my IV and I told him he had one shot, which he blew.

I hope everything is okay with your baby... I work for the hospital system and they really are the best!

  • Yep! I delivered DS there in Jan of 2010. I had a wonderful experience for the most part. I went in for an induction. The day time(am) nurse was amazing! She was the nicest person ever and was so helpful. I had started progressing really well and she kept my spirits high by telling me she thought I'd have the baby by the time she went home. When I had issues with my epi(like PP said, this is a teaching hospital, and I said ok to a student to try my epi...big mistake for me. It ended up hurting like hell and not working at all.) she kept reassuring me and then offered other methods/drugs to help ease the labor pain. I can't remember the evening nurses because at that point I had had nubane twice(but it only works once btw), and was in a lot of pain so my memories are kind of foggy. I ended up having to have an emergency c-section and the in house surgeon had to do it because my ob was in another surgery at a different hospital. He was also amazing! I started crying and getting upset and he told me that everything would be fine, and even cracked a few jokes to lighten the mood. All in all, I had a wonderful experience with St. V's. DH's aunt works in the post delivery area, which was our main reason for choosing St. V's. But our experience with DS' birth sealed the deal for our next delivery to be there too!

  • I delivered there in 09 and I will most likely deliver there in October for our second. Ditto on being very specific about who you want in your room and doing your procedures....I apparently wasnt forceful enough and had some jackoff doing my epi and spinal for my C/S (PS it was the same guy). Im a hard stick, being obese, but I was stuck a total of about 8 times between both....and Im not saying that if the anesthesiologist who was in charge would have done it it would have gone any differently, but if you want something done a certain way just be really effing insistant.  Other than that I had great nurses, and an over all good experience...their LC was awesome, but ask for the LC if you are breastfeeding and have questions...the nurses tried to help me, but they didnt do much but make me guilty and frustrated.  If you have any more specific questions you can always ask me if you want! Good luck to you!

  • I didn't deliver there, but I have heard great things about St. Vs.  The only complaint I've ever heard is what others have said about it being a teaching hospital and that they wish they would have been more knowledgable and known to deny students doing certain things.  And my one friend said that students were unnecessarily checking her constantly.

  • I have never delivered at V's, that said V's and Toledo are the BEST NICU's in the area and if anything goes wrong they have the doctors and resources available to help you. And if that still doesn't satisfy then both also have mobile flight at the ready to take LO to AA or Cleveland Clinic.

  • Never had nicu with my deliveries either. delivered in 07 and 09 there. no problems....the Le Leche staff is awesome there too! my only complaint is the food!! its good but boyyyyy are they chincy! lol.
