Hotel advice, please! Visiting from MI

We'll be in Philadelphia for two weeks mid-June and I'd love some advice regarding where to stay.

The first week we're vacationing as a family, but the second week DH needs to work downtown on Chestnut Street. We would like an extended-stay hotel, but mostly because of the option for 2 bedrooms rather than the convenience of a kitchen. He is a Marriott rewards member, so we've been focusing on Residence Inns.

We've been back and forth between these two:

191 Washington Street, Conshohocken

600 West Swedesford Road, Berwyn

DS and I will be on our own the second week, during the days, and I plan to rent a jogging stroller so I can keep up my running.

If you have any other recommendations for where to stay (and what to see with a 3-year-old) I'd appreciate it. He's been looking as far as Deptford, NJ (which was shot down by the Money Matters ladies!) and North Wales (which is a 40+ minute drive to work).

We will be renting a car.

  • Residence Inn Cherry Hill will be closer to Philadelphia than the ones in Conshohocken or Berwyn.  About 15 minutes.  It's also close to Cooper River Park which would be great for running.  I had a friend recently stay there for a couple months due to water/fire damage at her condo and she really had a good experience there.

Don't know what the problem with Deptford, NJ is, but between that and Cherry Hill, I would choose Cherry Hill.  It's closer to more shopping and restaurants.  Can't give you any info on Conshy or Berwyn ones.

If you decide to look outside Marriott, I've heard good things about Homewood Suites by Hilton.

    Have fun in Philly!

  • My advice would be to stay in center city Philadelphia for sure.  Two weeks vacation at either one of those hotels (or the NJ options) would kill me

Ditto. There is a residence inn near City Hall, which would be a great location.

If this is the one with a Dunkin' Donuts and Quizno's on the street level, it looks like that's where we'll be the second week when work is picking up the tab--MM ladies suggested that, too. :D

  • Honestly there is no point to stay out of the city. Those lovations can all be a pain if you aren't familiar with the commute or trains.
  • If you definitely want to stay outside the city for the first week, I'd stay in Conshy.  It's right at the major roadways.  You could do all the day trips outside the city from there, and the 2nd week do all the activities in Philadelphia.

But be forewarned- the traffic is bad.

I guess the only point would be to save a little $$ on the hotel.

Don't forget: Your time is worth money. If you spend a significant amount of time sitting in traffic (and spending those savings on car rental, gas, etc) then it's a wash.

  • Ditch the car rental and save money that way. You can walk, cab it, or use public transit to get to the majority of the local attractions. Also, check out the Phlash Downtown Loop for getting around.

Agreed. The traffic you'll put yourself in is not worth the savings IMO. Everything from cc is pretty walkable and things like please touch museum or the zoo the phlash will take you there. Also the cost of parking for the day can be 10-30 bucks in the city.
  • We are also planning to visit friends about 2-3hr away (and some a little closer, 35min) the first week, so I thought we'd need the car then. When we head downtown for DH's work week, we're planning to return the rental car.

  • If you don't plan on any citying the first week then I understand staying outside.yoC early I do not know your child but would it be easier on him if you were in the same hotel the whole time?
  • I would recommend staying in the city the whole time if you can swing it only because you'll end up sitting in traffic. A lot.

That said out of the two you suggested Conshohocken would probably be the best choice just because it's close to most major roads.

I like the suggestion for Cherry Hill too because if you are renting a car you could make a quick trip to the beach one day.  Ocean City is a great kid friendly beach with a nice boardwalk and would only be about an hour or so to drive there from Cherry Hill.

I like this idea.  If you want to go into the city during your vaca week, you aren't far from the PATCO high speed line....and can get to most museums/sites with the Philly Phlash bus.

Oooh I'll pass it on to DH. Thanks!

My other thought, if we ended up in the city the whole time, would be to rent a car for the weekend when we visit our friends.

  • I would either stay in center city the whole time and rent a car on the weekend - OR - stay in Cherry Hill the first week and Center City the second week. In Cherry Hill, you can run along Cooper River Park, go to the Cherry Hill Mall, visit the Camden Aquarium and take a walk along the river (great views of Philadelphia), or drive to the beach for the day. Haddonfield is the next town over and has a nice little downtown with shops/restaurants.

When you're in Center City, visit the Please Touch Museum and go for a run along the Schuylkill River/Kelly Drive/Boathouse Row. It's a popular spot for families/runners! :)

This is exactly what we're doing, booked them both today.

Thank you all for your help and recommendations!
