My eyes.. rant.

Little back story - when I was 10 I got fiberglass in my left eye and had to have it removed.  I'm 100% traumatized by anything near my eye.  Since then my vision in my left eye has been deteriorating slowly but surely.  My right eye however, is still perfect.  I can't find a good eye doc to understand that and give me the correct prescription so I end up not wearing my glasses as often as I need them.

Last night I went to a new doc after two years, and he was awesome.  He listened to me and did a bunch of tests I've never had before by numbing my eyeballs and doing all kinds of neat stuff.  Apparently I have allergies.  I also have an astigmatism in that left eye.  Because of my astigmatism, I also cannot process blue neon lights (think WalMart.. I can see the blue, but can't read the writing) and I also have clogged eye glands.  The clogged glands are fairly normal for females my age due to hormones and eye make-up, but if left untreated can cause serious damage.  I now have prescription drops that I have to use once a day, as well as non-prescription to use 2-4 times a day for the allergies.  I also have to use warm compresses on my eyes for 10-12 minutes every day to moisten my eyes.  [Basically, my windsheild wiper fluid is all out so the windshield is not only staying dirty, but new dirt is collecting there every day] Lastly, my new glasses will be ready in a week or so and I'm so excited to finally be able to see things at a distance!

I feel a little weird about all of this.  I mean these are my EYES, so it freaks me out that I suddenly have to do things to actually take care of them.. if that makes sense. I expected to get new lenses and call it a day, not have a whole routine of eye-cleaning and what not.

Anyone else have any of these issues?

Re: My eyes.. rant.

  • I have absolutely awful allergies in my eyes in the fall (usually August-September).  It is unbearable, I take drops, allergy meds and that makes it so I can function without wanting to tear my eyes out, although it's still uncomfortable, but there are days when I want to remove my eyes from my head and put them in a bucket of ice they are so itchy.

That is awesome that you finally have a great eye doctor.  You are right in saying those are your EYES, you've got to do what's necessary to take care of them!

I have trouble in the very early spring - like March.  My eyes water uncontrollably to the point that the corners are red and sore for weeks.  So annoying!

Oh wow that's crazy. Good to hear you finally found a good eye Dr. though. Every time someone brings up glasses or eyes it reminds me that I need to find an eye doctor up here and get my glasses fixed. Sitting in front of a computer all day doesn't help my far-sightedness.

The only other issue I have with my eyes is they're super sensitive. Every time I get them checked out, and they shine the light in my eyes, they always comment on it and it hurts like a wh0re.

  • I'm glad he did all those tests.  As much as I freak out with anything anywhere near my eyes, I know I need to do it.

Which reminds me, for those who've had your eyes tested, you know the puff of air test?  Ya know, the worst possible thing to happen to you? lol  Well they don't do that anymore.  Why, you ask?  It's not a reliable test at all AND it traumatizes several patients so they no longer go to an eye Dr to avoid this!  I thought that was pretty crazy, especially since it's the worst thing on the planet for me lol

  • I don't have any of the same issues, but my eyes are so dry that I couldn't wear contacts when I was in college.  So they plugged my tear drains (with some sort of silicone stopper thing - that's the medical term!) and it didn't help then.  Anyway, I have now found a brand of contacts that works really well for my dry eyes, and I can see again!  I hate (hate!) wearing my glasses, so I'm glad something finally worked.

One of the other things they gave me was a prescription eye drop that I was supposed to use daily (maybe even a couple/few times a day?) and that didn't go over so well because I never remembered to do it...so I know how you feel.  Adding in this whole new step of things to do every day is challenging!

I'm glad you found a good eye doctor, though.  That's important.  I mean, your vision isn't something you want to mess with!

Oh, and I never knew that about astigmatism and blue lights.  I have a very slight astigmatism, so it must not be bad enough for me to have that problem.  But that's really interesting.

And last thing - yay for being able to see next week!  I hope you wear your glasses more than I did before my contacts started working for me!

Hahaha!  You're so right...it is the worst thing ever!  (although dilation is a close second since you see orange for the first 15 minutes or so...and then get to wear those sweet sunglasses they give you)

  • I actually don't mind wearing my glasses.  I really neeeeed them for distance and especially at night - but when I'm tired or in slow motion they really help.  I can't wait to have the correct lenses and get back to seeing again!

**possible side-eye: I've noticed small wrinkles (crows feet and in between my eyes) from my constant squinting so this is what really prompted me to find a new Dr and get my sh!t together before I need botox Embarrassed

  • Oh my gosh!  When I first read the first part of your op, I thought you meant you had to have your eye removed!!!

I've had to wear glasses since the 5th grade and they've gotten progressively worse over time.  I'm sure I'll be in bifocals before long, and probably then trifocals like my mom.

But I think I look weird without glasses now.

  • TPayne!  I still have both my eyeballs lol

Do you get the annual testing?  Like dialated and all that?  I didn't need to be dialated at this Dr because he said my pupils were large enough for him to read.. which I thought was weird lol

  • LMAO!  I'm glad you have both of your eyeballs!

I go for an annual checkup, but they only dialate my eyes once every other year.

  • Did you ever have the numbing drops??  The liquid is actually yellow so for the next 20 minutes my tears were neon yellow!  Plus my eyes felt very weird because I couldn't really feel myself blinking so it felt like my eyes were going to pop out of my head lol

Can you tell I'm feeling very weird about this whole experience!

  • Yeah, I've had the numbing drops a couple of times.  I hate the yellow stuff.

  • Megan - What contacts did you find that help your dry eye? I had to stop wearing my contacts shortly before the wedding due to dry eye issues (feels like I've got sand under my eyelids some days), but suffered thru on the wedding day because I didn't want pictures of me in glasses. I've taken to wearing my glasses all the time now, but would love to switch back to contacts.
  • Chelsie - I wear Acuvue Oasys.  They've worked really well for me.  I mean, I can tell when my two weeks is almost up because they'll start drying out by the end of the day, but not to an intolerable point.  And this sounds weird, but they are kind of thick (I think my eye doctor used the term "they have more body") so they feel better going in, too...not so scratchy.

He put me in a sample pair of another brand that are supposed to be great for dry eyes and they didn't work for me at all...I was ready to scratch my eyes out by the time I got home.  So I think different things work for different people.

But I would highly recommend at least asking your eye dr for a sample pair.  Just be sure to always change them out after two weeks.  Oh, and, I use Clear Care solution, which seems to help, too.

  • Is it possible to wear one contact?  I mean, do people do this?

Yes, a woman I work with wears just one.

Hm.  Interesting.  I'd like to not have to carry my glasses with me, let alone wear them at all times while driving.. but I don't think I could actually put it in.  I have a serious fear of things near my eye so I don't know.  Maybe I could though since I can scratch my own eye, and do my own drops since I have control.  I may ask him about this on my follow-up.
