XP: Converting fuse box to circuit breakers
I asked this on the D&R board, but figured I'd ask here too. Has anyone converted over to circuit breakers from fuses? Was it DIY or done by an electrician? I was sort of wondering what the general cost
would be? We have 12 fuses for our entire house with the entire basement on one fuse, and then a few others dedicated to appliances and A/C, so yeah...do the math with how many that leaves for lighting and whatnot, it's ridiculous. We've been in this house a year now
and I think we need to get this done. Thanks!
Re: XP: Converting fuse box to circuit breakers
My stepdad is an electrician and he did ours for us. All we paid for were parts and I think that was around $200. Knowing what it involves, I would not try to DIY this. Its electricity for goodness sake you don't want to mess something up. I would estimate just based on what my stepdad would charge people to do this it would cost about $500. I would have you contact him but he is in Indiana so no help for a referral.
Are you looking to switch the main disconnect to the circuit breaker as well? If so, then definitely hire someone. If you're keeping the main disconnect, it's not too hard to make the switch, but that's assuming you know a thing or two about electrical systems. Another thing to consider though- you probably need a permit to do this. They're likely not going to issue a permit to anyone except a licensed electrician
I am an architect.... hire it out. This is not a DIY project.
We had 3 panels done (yes our tiny house had 3 panels) and we had an electrician friend do it for us and he still charged us $700 and it took him all day.
We have a very good friend who is a master electrician who did it for us. He only charged us parts and I think it was around $150-200. We didn't pull a permit at first, but the city made us do it later when we had our rental inspection.
ditto everyone else. hire it out unless you know a licensed electrician that would do it for you.
This, we didn't convert from fuse to breakers, but we had all of our panels updated to code. According to our EL, it was the same amount of work because we had to buy everything brand new. This cost $700. We also were quoted for a generator hook up, this was an additional $300. Haven't done that yet but need to.
