s/o groom's cake: poll

My brother is getting married in October and my mom is already talking about what type of cake we should do for him.

What type of cake did your dh have at your wedding?

Re: s/o groom's cake: poll

  • It was just a small round layer cake decorated to look like a baseball with his name written on top.  It wasn't worth the money, in my opinion, esp. since we had tons of cake left over and didn't even cut into it at the wedding.  He took it work with him that week.

  • DH's cake was a Jeff Gordon cake. It was chocolate cake and chocolate icing. He loved it. We could probably have done without a cake that big, but I wanted something for him. We had plenty of cake left over.

I would recommend just getting a very small grooms cake because really you do end up with a lot of cake leftover, IMO.

  • TT has a praline cheesecake. I cut out the logo for our alma mater and we finely ground up graham crackers and dusting the cheesecake with that and pulled the logo off. It was really neat looking.

  • oo carmen that sounds so good!

everyone loves my grandmother's homemade cakes, including dh, so she made all of her most loved cakes. 14 layer chocolate, italian cream, and caramel. Hoping my brother will request something homemade like that and save my mom some moolah! :)

  • DH's was a two layer, strawberry cake (his favorite). The top layer had a die cast Firebird sitting on it, and the bottom layer had chocolate icing put on to look like mud with a jeep crawling up the side.

We didnt have a grooms cake at the wedding, but I did get him one for the rehearsal dinner.

It was in the shape of a basketball, and I bought 2 little ornaments from our college to place on top.  They were a snow couple- one was the snowman with a basketball, and the other was a snow-woman in a cheerleading outfit with pom poms.  It was cute, and now we hang them on our christmas tree :)

  • We didn't have a grooms cake either. Although for our civil ceremony in May, my MIL got us a White Sox cake.

Oh, I dunno the exact etiquette on it. We didn't divy out items in our wedding. My mom and I just both assumed she'd be buying his cake since his FI's parents are paying for everything else except the rehearsal dinner.

  • I think we may have spent more on the groom's cake than on the "real" wedding cake.  Stick out tongue  We just got our wedding cake from a grocery store (but I still thought it was yummy).  The groom's cake was from a different baker who was kinda known for her sculpted cakes.  She made a rock that we've climbed together, and she sculpted little people climbing the rock ("I" was wearing a wedding veil).  Oh, and there was a little tribute to DH's dad..."he" was sitting next to the river at the base of the rock, fishing.  It was also really good...chocolate Guinness cake with Bailey's flavored filling.  It tasted like an Irish Car Bomb.

It is common in the South for the Brides family to do the wedding and for the grooms family to do the grooms cake and any food on the cake. So you and your mom were correct by our traditions.
