What's on your grocery list?

The husband and I eat like kids. Seriously. I'm tired of eating like that, and I'm tired of eating pure crap. I need new ideas.

When I make a grocery list, it's the same thing over and over. I don't know how to venture out. Maybe it's because I'm all about the simple things? If it takes too long or is too difficult to make/cook, I'm immediately turned off towards it.

So, are there simple, healthy things on the grocery store shelves? What is on your grocery list?

  • I try to stay away from anything processed. From the farmer's market, I get chicken, beef, and eggs as needed, and cheese (because that is always needed), and whatever fruit or vegetable looks good. From the grocery store I get whole wheat bread, frozen vegetables, fish, organic tomato sauce, whole wheat pasta, and about 90 other things that I'm forgetting but that somehow add up to $150 every two weeks. I get the same things over and over again, too.

    H and I decided a little over a week ago that we aren't going to eat out as much, so we went to Crest and stocked up. We spent like  $180 and expected it to last for 2 weeks, but all the produce is going bad and we haven't eaten it. I love the idea of eating more fresh foods, but it's challenging to plan it right so everything doesn't go bad before you can get to it!

  • I shop weekly, and get some stuff from the Co-op, like eggs and meats, every month.

    I try to buy vegetables in season, and only what I need that week, as they do go bad; however, some of my co-op veggies have lasted quite awhile!

    I look at the Homeland circular to see if there is anything on sale that I need, and cross-reference any coupons I have.

    This month, I'll be doing a big pantry stock-up. I already started by getting lots of cans of beans, tomatoes, Rotel, and a few other things that have been on sale like balsamic vinegar. Whole wheat and "smart taste" pasta are on the list, as well as canned beans, pasta sauce, canned veggies, healthy cereal, soy sauce, brown rice, and some baking supplies. I also hope to stock the fridge and freezer with some meat and cheese, and even scored a coupon for organic veggies online.

    The above are pretty normal purchases for me week to week.

  • I buy produce, milk, and whole wheat bread weekly. Apples, bananas, baby carrots, prewashed lettuce for salads, and then whatever else is needed for that week's meals.

    I make a big grocery run every two weeks. An average list contains these items: brown rice, black beans, chicken breast, whole wheat tortillas, greek yogurt, cheese depending on meal plan, frozen veggies, dry pasta, canned tomatoes.

    Do you meal plan? I cannot go to the grocery store without planning my meals and then making a list. 

    Simple meal ideas for you:

    Grilled chicken or fish, steamed veggies, and brown rice

    Baked potatoes

    Whole wheat pasta and homemade sauce (super easy, I promise)

    Using black beans as a protein (burritos, tacos, just beans and rice, etc)

    Make a wrap with whole wheat tortillas (lettuce, tomatoes, chicken, dressing, or you could go veggie)

  • Ugh, grocery shopping stresses me out!! For a while, we would plan our meals for the week (using mostly weight watcher recipes) and then go grocery shopping. But for the last couple of weeks we've been trying to go super cheap so we can save money and we've been eating so unhealthy! I'm ready to get back to healthy recipes. Here a couple things I can think of that are easy and healthy. I think some of these were mentioned in pp.

    Grilled Chicken with veggies (I like getting the frozen steamers. You just toss the bag in the microwave and it steams the veggies in about 5-10 minutes!)

    Baked Potatoes or Baked Sweet Potatoes

    Oven baked fries (or oven baked sweet potato fries) for a side. Super easy and not too time consuming.

    In the produce section, they have little pouches of fruit (sliced apples with grapes, sliced apples with caramel, etc.) We would buy fresh fruit, but it would just sit there and go bad. These little pouches are neat because you can just grab one right before you leave the house. They're super convenient.

    Baked Chimichangas - these are delicious! (let me know if you want the recipe.) You pretty much warm up a bunch of stuff in a skillet (browned ground turkey or beef, salsa, refried beans, green chili peppers, cheese) and put them in tortillas and bake them.

    They're delicious and quite healthy. I have a hard time getting in green leafy vegetables every day so this smoothie helps.

    As far as the grocery store... we buy a lot of fruit. Especially this time of year. Fruit makes a really good, sweet snack. Apples, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, oranges.... 

    For a dessert I sometimes get a little angel food cake (which is fairly low cal) and top it with ff cool whip and lots of strawberries and blueberries.

    You should try it! I usually eat them for breakfast. Sometimes that's all I have for breakfast and sometimes I'll have an egg or two with it for the protein, depending on the time factor in the morning. There are a ton of variations on that site as well. I usually stick to the original but sometimes I add peanut butter. 

  • Here's my typical grocery list:

    Strawberries, apples, mangos, tangerines, blueberries, carrots, spinach, cucumbers, mushrooms, squash (yellow), zucchini, broccoli, bell peppers (green), asparagus, green beans, onions, eggs, chicken, beef, pork chops, shredded cheese, milk, bread (I only buy the bread every 3 weeks or so), tomato sauce, honey, peanut butter and chips. I'm not vegetarian, I just love me some veggies, especially stir fried. I wish I could just shop like once every few weeks, but produce doesn't usually last that long, so I go shopping every week. I've been trying to eat less meat because the cost for it seems to be going up like crazy around here! Seriously, I spend at least $1.50 more per pound this year than I did last year. 

    For H, I try to make big meals, that way there's enough left over for lunch the next day and he's not always stuck with sandwiches or something boring like that. He's a very picky eater.

  • I just got back from the grocery, so I can type off of my receipt. In addition to this, we have tons of bulk beans and dry grains (in lots of varieties) a bag of frozen crawfish tails, tons of Diet Coke, pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, lots of fancy cheeses from our last Trader Joes trip, apples, carrots, and half and half. Beyond that, the coffers were pretty bare. Tomorrow I'm driving to Guthrie to get some beef products from a local place. That plus the below is pretty typical for us.

    4 pounds organic smart chicken, tikka masala sauce, splenda, tea bags, mandarin oranges, 1% milk, sliced black olives, big jar of yeast, ditalini pasta, LaCroix sparkling water, Fage Greek yogurt, 2 red bell peppers, shredded cabbage, collard greens, cilantro, parsley, green bell pepper, celery, romaine lettuce hearts, strawberries, 2 mini cantalopes, 2 ears of corn, large avocado, large whole pineapple, mango, bananas, cherries, white onion, garlic, shallots, fresh green beans, sugar snap peas, serrano chilis, limes, peaches, tortillas, eggs, baked cheddar ruffles, baked tortilla chips, whole wheat bread, and red curry paste
