CD questions

Two WWYDs?

We're an elimination communication/undiapering family.  Adrian doesn't poop in his diaper and hasn't for months, he only goes on the potty (regardless if it's me or DH).  So, we don't have poopy diapers.  I've been doing the pre-rinse  before the wash, extra rinse, but I'm wondering if this pre-rinse is unnecessary since there's no poop to wash away?

How long would you go between washes before it's considered gross?  We're using fewer diapers all the time.  When it's just the two of us home, he only wears a diaper at night and when we're out and about. He pees on the potty the rest of the time (which consistently amazes me).   DH shifts between diaper free and diapering, so he wears diapers more frequently with DH.  So, we're going through fewer diapers.  I of course could do smaller loads, but would prefer to wait for larger loads.  What would the longest you'd go between washes?

And...I don't share this choice with a lot of people with undiapering, as I'm afraid people will think I'm crazy since it's not widely popular.  But it has come naturally to me, as professionally, I'm specialize in communication with the little ones.  One day, I just figured, if I know what he's up to, why wipe it away in a diaper...why not help him put it where it belongs?  I showed DH what to look for, it's worked for him too.  Honestly, I think it's brought us closer...the only drawback is Adrian's not a fan of diapers anymore.  He's so proud of himself for going on the potty!

That is awesome, I'm impressed!!  Do you know when he's going to pee or do you just have him use the potty regularly enough that he just knows to pee when it's potty time?

I think you could get away without doing the pre-rinse, and I would wash on the 3rd day...I think any longer than that you're going to have a lot of ammonia happening and may not be good for the diapers to be wet that long?

  • I don't CD but I don't think I'd let a load sit more than 2 or 3 days, tops.

And could you come over to my house to potty train Helen? She's really resisting and I'm starting to panic about getting her trained before preschool in September. She hides when she poops and then denies it. She doesn't care if she has a wet diaper/pull-up/training pants. Seriously, she peed in her cloth training pants to the point where they were completely saturated all the way up the front and back and she still didn't say anything. I thought the "bootcamp" training method was nuts but now I'm wondering if it's what I'm going to have to do to get it to click with DD?

Thanks for the words of encouragement!  I wash every 3-4 days now...so I won't go longer than that.  I think I could go a week or more now...but that seems gross.  I'll try skipping the pre rinse.

I bring him to the potty regularly and I cue him ("Let's pee on the potty" and I make a hissing sound) and he pees on command. It doesn't need to be a potty, he'll do it outside too...and at other places (other people's homes and at church).  At this point, I can sense when he needs to go...I can't explain it...I just know.  Like tonight he peed 3x in an hour...and at other times he won't need to go for over an hour.  And sometimes he'll hold it for an extended period of time...even when he has a diaper on.  I can talk more about the hows if you're interested.  It's really much easier than I thought it woudl be and I'm really glad we are doing it.

I wish I could help that age Kimberly...but I don't know.  I imagine it's quite hard to potty train a kiddo who can move quickly and has an opinion.  One of the therapists I know tells parents "I don't know anyone who wasn't potty trained before college".  :-)

Ugh, I hate hearing that.  I mean, I know it's true, but really, who wants their kid to take forever with this stuff and possibly be an accident/bed wetting kid?  Kimberly, I'm right there in the same boat with you.  Owen hides when pooping too (or last night he tried to get ME to leave the room because he was busy with a puzzle)...then he tells me once he's done "I'm pooping!"  Weasel.  I know he's only just now two and that it's early to get frustrated, but I sense a long road ahead.

First, jl&jl- That's so amazing to hear about! I am totally impressed. I agree with not going too long between washings even if you only have pee and not a lot of diapers, but I don't think you need to pre-rinse.

And Kimberly and Megan- I am in the same boat too! Eli will say "I'm pooping" or "I'm peeing," asks to be changed when his diaper is wet/dirty but has no interest in the potty. I ask every time if he wants to sit on the potty and he says no and runs away. Although he is doing better with sitting on it for a few seconds when we try it out. I don't want to push it before he's ready, so I let it go at that. When I'm home this summer I plan to do some more research and make a bigger effort towards it and I'm hoping he'll pick it up quickly.

  • jackie, that's awesome!  I think doing whatever works for your family is what you need to do.  As far as diapers, not longer than 2-3 days between  loads.  :)

  • What you guys are doing sounds amazing! I'm impressed!

I wouldn't go more than three days between washings. I was pushing it to four days and we have pee-only diapers (I use disposables when I know she usually poops) and the ammonia smell was awful. I had to strip my diapers to get rid of it.

  • Holy balls I can't believe he's potty trained!! Kudos!! I think had we done it months ago, we would have been successful. Luke used to tell us before pooping. Now he just likes to sit on the toilet and not do anything. So I've been waiting for summer, since he'll be half naked anyway.

Two in diapers kind of blows, so I'd love to get one done with.

I'm guessing it's probably too late for Marcus; he's not very interested in going near a potty right now.  I'm planning on a whole lot of naked time outside this summer.  I imagine EC would be hard to do with a baby in full-time daycare because of the limited time you would have to work on it together and a daycare provider being unlikely to do it.
