Personal References?

Do you still include personal references on your reference list?

I was going to take them out this time.

I typically listed 3 professional and 3 personal.

This time I was thinking of listing 4 or 5 professional: one my former boss of 3.5 years (retired), a coworker for the same time frame, also retired, and two other people I work with closely now. All are difficult to reach due to the nature of their job as well as the fact that one is going on maternity leave on Friday.

If I were to include personal references they would be my two bosses from two prior retail jobs I have held, one prior and one I work now as well as the retired coworker.

What do you think?

Re: Personal References?

  • Unless you're going for a high-level position I don't think any company would call 6 references, and including so many waters down their impact IMO.  I would pick your top 3 (maybe two professional and one personal) and then keep the rest in your back pocket if the company is digging really deep or if your top 3 are hard to reach.

  • From an HR standpoint I view person references as worthless.  I don't want to hear what your neighbor has to say about you - I want to know what your old boss has to say!
