Had first RE appt this morning (so far, so good)

So here's the latest update on our fertility quest:

We saw the urologist last week and he doesn't think DH's white blood cell count was anything to worry about -- DH is on antibiotics and will get another SA done next week to make sure it is cleared up.  He also ponted out that the lab that did the testing actually had a 4 hour delay from the sample time, so some of his numbers are probably even better than the report shows (which were still well into normal).  He did an exam and didn't find anything physically wrong on DH's side either.

Now for me -- I picked up copies of all of my records from the OB yesterday afternoon to take with me to the RE this morning -- noticed on the ultrasound results from when I was pregnant last fall that it found a fibroid inside my uterus that nobody ever told me about.  Started flipping out last night about it, not knowing if it could have grown or be the kind that affects fertility, etc.  Also really annoyed that the OB didn't even mention it -- even though it doesn't look like it had anything to do with the m/c, it still seems like the kind of thing you should mention to your patient, along with what symptoms to look out for to tell if it's getting too big in the future.  My mom had to have a huge fibroid removed about 6-7 years ago that was causing her a lot of pain and was missed by her original OB, so I'm probably being overly-sensitive on the issue.

On to the RE this morning (Valley Hosp. in Paramus) -- the staff was great and the doc seems really nice, although a little hard to understand sometimes b/c of his accent and he talks really fast.  He also thinks it looks like DH is okay based on the results so far.  Did an ultrasound on me and actually had trouble finding the fibroid because it's so small (actually smaller than it used to be), so he doesn't think it's anything to worry about.  We'll just have to watch it if I do get KU because the pregnancy hormones can make it get bigger.

He actually took the time to point out everything to me as he was looking at it on the u/s.  He could see that I had ovulated from my left ovary this cycle, which was kind of cool to see.

Everything else looks ok structurally, but I'll have to get an HSG to make sure (NOT looking forward to that one).  Will also still have to do blood tests for ovarian reserve.  Can't do any of it until next cycle starts, so we have about 2 weeks of waiting to do the rest of the testing, then we'll meet with him again when the results are all in to discuss a plan.

Feeling better now that things are in motion and we can cross at least a few things off the list of possible problems.  Of course, if they don't find anything actually *wrong* with me, then that leaves us in a weird position of having to decide if we should spend the money for IUI to increase our chances, or just keep trying and hoping it happens on its own.  I guess we'll figure that out when we get to that point.

Anyhow, that's the latest and greatest from my life.  Thanks again to all of you lovely ladies for the support through all of this nonsense (especially if you actually took the time to read this whole post!)

  • SO happy that things seem to be going in the right direction. The HSG test was not fun for me. I took off work that day, and I was very glad I did as I had lots of cramping/bleeding after. The actual test can be painful or not depending on if your tubes are open and your pain tolerance. Mine were open so it wasn't terrible, but when the catheter went in and they let the dye flow it killed and caused cramping right away.

I will say that IUI worked well for us as it only took 2 cycles with IUI for us to get pregnant, but they were covered so it wasn't a hard decision to do it. If you don't have any male fertility problems (and it sounds like you probably won't in the end), then you might want to do a few cycles with timed intercourse and see how it goes before paying for the IUI! The fertility drugs do wonders and with the extra follicles your husband's swimmers will hopefully get more than 1 target! I wish you tons and tons of luck, and am always here if you have any questions or need to talk!
