I know that I am the only one who could make this decision, I'm looking for some advice/input. Maybe some of you can offer some input that I'm too blind to see because I'm living the situation.
Some background: I'm in the legal field, going to school PT to hopefully enter the medical field. This would be a career change and would take about two maybe three years to complete. I'm doing my best to pay for most of it in cash. I also work a second job but that money doesn't get included into my monthly budget/planning.
Job 1: Public sector. I pay $25 per month in tolls. I drive 82 miles round trip per day. This job is not in the state in which I live in and I pay double taxes. One hour plus commute, depending on traffic. I also pay union dues about $40 per month. I will never advance, one because I don't live in the state and two, it's just the way that the system is structured. Eventually I will cap out in pay and that'll be that. No new skills will be learned. My job is robotic (preparing legal docs), I do get a lot of down time, but I'm bored.
Job 2: Private sector/small family firm. No toll roads. It would be 24 miles round trip per day. This job is in the state that I live in. Fifteen minute commute. This would be a 7k pay cut per year. They offer benefits and at this point I do not know if they will be paying for them in full (this is possible as my last private sector job did) or have me contribute. If I have to contribute I will do so in a manner allowing me to claim it on my taxes. There will be no down time here, I will be learning a lot of new skills and doing more things along the line of paralegal work. I told him I am going to school and he is willing to adjust my hours (the one day I need to or to let me do 8:30-4:30pm which I would prefer as this would allow me to get to my second job earlier and increase my earning capacity there.
I'm sure I left things out. I will ask him about the benefit contribution when he calls at the end of the week since he said he will call either way.
Again, I'm looking for input. New skills which I will be able to use if I were to go elsewhere vs. more money. I know money doesn't equal happiness. I'm trying to also consider that Job 2 would probably be better for my career/skills.
Any insight/questions or things to make me think would be very much appreciated!
TIA!

I am leaning toward job number 2. I will negotiate pay if I am offered the job. There are so many issues going on at Job 1 right now (and I very much would love to share all the details) that I know I could be very biased.
Long story short: my supervisor (not to be confused with boss because I am in the public sector) has some major issue, makes things difficult for the females members of his supervisory staff, at the moment due to things he did and said to me and at least 4 other women in the office, EEO is involved and so far he is no longer allowed to speak with me.
I had a feeling something was missing because this seemed like a no-brainer to me also-you're experiencing loyalty guilt. Go, take the new job. You have a job you don't like, why would you stay?
Before I read your second post, I calculated that your $25/day in tolls would be ~$6000 for the year, not including gas/stress/etc, which makes up for the $7K pay cut.
