Cleaning Pillows?

Probably a silly question, but how does everybody clean their pillows?   Can they just be thrown into a laundry machine?

Re: Cleaning Pillows?

  • I just threw mine out in the back yard today in full sunlight, for about 5 hours.  That's supposed to kill a lot of the dustmites.

  • I run the ones on our bed through the washer once a month or so.  I have a down pillow, DH has some huge old pillow he won't get rid of.  The guest pillows don't get much use and some of them are fluffier (and probably harder to dry) so I don't know if I'll be able to toss those in the washer.
  • The washing machine doesn't kill the pillows? I didn't know they could be cleaned this way. I might have to try this.

  • FYI: I just cleaned my pillows.  Definitely found out the hard way that you are only supposed to watch one pillow at a time , or two at max.  I put three in the washing machine on gentle cycle at the same time and they all came out extremely lumpy.  I guess I should have researched this ahead of time.  Oh well - I guess you live and learn, right?
