My hair has ruined every vacuum cleaner! I need some recs!

I need a good vacuum in the $200-$300 price range that can handle my horrible shedding habit.  My hair has ruined all of our cheaper vacuums by wrapping it around the bottom brush thing.  Shaving my head is not an option but a new vacuum is.  Can anyone give me some good vacuum recs?

Re: My hair has ruined every vacuum cleaner! I need some recs!

  • You can take scissors and cut hair out of the bottom brush. I have to do it periodically on mine because I shed a lot, too. We have a Shark pet hair vacuum we like. It's from Bed Bath and Beyond, but I don't think they carry it anymore.

  • I do this all the time, yet it melts into the brush and ruins the vacuum.
  • If your vac is completely beyond repair, I recommend an Oreck, but honestly, you're going to have to clean that beater bar too.

If just the brush is broken on the machine, I'd just take it into a repair shop to get it fixed. If the whole thing is busted, that's another story.

  • I have a few areas that I tend to find more hair-the bathroom by the bed- I rub my hand over the carpet several times and it pulls the hair together. I have also used a lint roller across the carpet in areas before vacuuming. I know it is a lot of work, but cheaper than replacing vacuums all the time.

  • Do you make it a habit of brushing your hair vigorously a few times a day?  Pick a spot in your house like the bathroom or bedroom, and just bend over and brush it from all angles, if you do this when you get up, when you get home and again before bed, it should help to "schedule" the "shedding." Hope that helps, when I was on accutane, it made my hair come out like crazy, I hope you can find a way to make it less of a hassle!
  • we have a shark navigator.  i shed, and so do my cats, and this thing is seriously a miracle worker!

  • I have the same problem, and even though I only brush my hair in the bathroom, it is still EVERYWHERE.  After we bought our latest vacuum, I have started first using the hose attachment to run over the areas where I know there is more hair (bedroom, my bathroom).  Also, I bought a vacuum that shows the brush through the top.  When I start to see it filling up with hair I can cut it off right away.
  • We have a Dyson Animal and it's amazing (we have dogs). Before we bought this one, I would check the bar occasionally and cut the hair out.

In our bathroom, I brush the hair up with a small brush/dustpant and toss it rather than vacuuming it.

  • We used to have this issue and went through 2 vacuums due to it.  I bought a dyson animal used off Amazon, and I LOVE it. I really didn't want to spend the money on a new one because they are pretty expensive, but I'm really glad I did end up getting one.

We also started vacuuming more often, and I've noticed that with my long hair and two dogs that shed like crazy, that I don't have to clean the bottom of the vacuum out nearly as much.

  • Our Dyson Animal has survived 6 years w/ a cat that sheds, and 2 of my crazy post-pregnancy hair losses ;) It's still running great!

  • I love our dyson animal...we have 3 cats, 2 dogs, and I have long hair...i don't know how I survived before!
  • I agree, I love my Dyson Animal.  A friend of mine also bought hers refurbished for a better price and she loves it as well.
