Dog play groups

My hub and I are a part of a shiba inu playgroup, but they tend to meet a lot in Arlington or Bethesda, which is a bit of a hike for us. We're in PG County right on the border of Anne Arundel.  So if there's anyone interested, we'd love some puppy playdates and some shiba inu time!

Does your dog like to swim?

I have an aussie/lab mix who loves to swim and during the summer we go over to the dog beach at John Downs Park in Pasadena - there are always a bunch of dogs there and (unlike the dog park near where I live) dogs are 99.5% friendly and well behaved and the owners are responsible.  I take KJ every chance I get when it starts getting warmer, though we like to go a little earlier in the morning before it gets really packed with people and dogs.

  • Please, tell me that is KJ in your picture... So cute! I've heard a lot about this dog beach! We went to Quiet Waters once and she seemed... hesistant.  I think she really likes to wade but not necessarily swim.  She dives into the local pond all the time but never goes in too far.  It's challenging for her because she can't be off leash and doesn't get a ton of leeway. But I'd love to give a dog beach another try!

If it's warm this weekend, we'll have to give Johns Down a try! Thanks for the great suggestion!

Yup that's her... the little love of my life.

We went to Quiet Waters the summer before last - but I thought it had closed because of beach erosion - so we haven't been back.  I loved that there was a dog wash right outside the entrance - we'd drop her off there and go into Annapolis for lunch and when we came back she'd be squeaky clean!

There was a dog last weekend on a really long leash at the beach swimming - though it looked like his poor owner was having a tough time not getting him caught up with other dogs/people, etc.

Kiah didn't love the water when we first took her, but she loves her ball, so we would throw it just a couple of inches from her, she'd walk in and get it, then we'd throw it farther, so she'd actually have to swim a bit - she was hesitant at first, but now she loves it.  You just say the word "beach" and she's waiting at the door to leave.  We're in Silver Spring, but I bought a pass for John Downs because we'll be there all summer long - probably the extent of my social life.

I'll keep an eye out for a Shiba Inu.  KJ will be the one barking her head off.  It never stops.

  • kiahj - I think we were there the same time as you - was it Sunday?  We saw the husky with the really long leash. I felt bad for the pup - he seemed to really want to swim free!

Ours was the dog who wouldn't get out of the water - she was obsessively fetching a really large stick.  She's a medium size, fawn color lab mix, and tremendously cute :)  I don't remember seeing your dog, though, so maybe we just missed each other.

This is the first time we've gone there and it was really nice and Molly loved it. Unfortunately it is about an hour's drive for us :(

  • Yeah, we're about 45 minute away too.  That's the problem with the shiba group we joined.  Everyone wants to meet in Arlington, which is very close for them.  We're totally the opposite direction! :)

Aww, poor husky! That would be my dog... She's so active and curious but can't be trusted off leash.  I think it's her nature.

Oooohhhh, it would have been fun to say hello!  I didn't see any dogs with sticks but I get really focused when I'm there because I'm afraid that KJ is going to swim to China on me.  She lost her ball pretty quickly so we were only there for about 45 minutes.  I was the girl with the big DSLR camera taking pictures of all the dogs - who's dog kept running up to the older couple in the camp chairs and shaking her wet smelly body all over them.  Oops.

That stinks that its so far of a drive!  Its about 40 minutes for us with absolutely no traffic - though my stop at the slowest Starbucks drive-thru on earth usually adds 20 minutes to make it a solid hour too!
