Ear infection for Big B :(

Poor little man. I feel so bad. He has been sick for the past few weeks but just a cold and coughing a lot. I thought we were on the mend but the past two nights have been awful sleep wise and he has been waking frequently crying like he is in pain. That clued me in that something might be wrong. He also has had diarrhea and is vomiting up most of his bottles. Poor little thing has lost half a pound in the last week and at his four month appointment today he found an ear infection. Ugh. I just hate that the little man is in pain. I am super sheltered in this respect because Ella has only had ONE infection and even that was just "questionable." I know many of you ladies have gone the tubes route here so I consider myself very lucky.

So we are starting antibiotics and hoping little man feels better soon. For those of you experienced in ear infections- did your little ones have diarrhea or vomiting? Did that clear up pretty quickly once on meds? I HATE seeing him vomit up every bottle :(

In other news- he was 26.3 inches so 90% in height and 14 lbs 6 oz which is 39% in weight. Bless his little heart he was still full of smiles today and just fine as long as he wasn't laying down. Even the shots didn't phase him much. Today was the first day of a new protocol at the office and they combined a few of the vaccines. He only got two injections and one oral instead of four injections and one oral. Less pokes!

Re: Ear infection for Big B :(

  • You have had a rough few weeks.  It sounds like it was good timing for B's appointment and to find the ear infection.  It's so hard when they are that young, but you could tell he was in some sort of pain.  My oldest son was like Ella -- one ear infection in over a year, and my youngest had close to 10 during before he turned 1.

I didn't notice vomiting with ear infections, but the infections seemed to be paired with loose stools.  Also, now that Brody is on antibiotics, I think some babies have diarrhea and/or vomiting as a side effect ... just to know those symptoms may continue for your little guy :(.  I don't remember how quickly the symptoms improved after medicine -- after quite a few infections we would move to the stronger antibiotic.  Did the Ped mention anything related to B's vomiting -- or if it may be infection-related?  Is he vomiting when he's coughing?

Brody is growing beautifully!!  How sweet he was smiling through the appointment despite the way he felt.  Hope he feels better soon.

  • Oliver had ear infections from 6 months until we did tubes....nonstop.  It was rough.  He never had vomitting or diarrhea from the ear infections.  He would get a fever and be super fussy and almost always it started with a cold.  Then the antibiotics (certain ones) would cause diarrhea and diaper rash.  Oliver only had vomitting and diarrhea from his reflux and food intolerances (milk specifically).

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the insight ladies. Ugh I just don't know what to do. He is STILL vomiting up most of his bottles. The pedi wasn't quite sure about the vomiting yesterday- said it could be from congestion or possibly just a weird symptom of an ear infection but I was hoping it would get better on the antibiotics. I feel SO bad for him. We have done loads and loads of laundry the past few days because he vomits all over himself and us leading to lots of outfit changes. I hope this resolves itself soon!

  • Zoey had her share of ear infections before she got tubes (the day after her 1st birthday). The tubes seem to have really helped.  Honestly, I think she had more trouble & infections than we even realized at the time.

I do think she sometimes had diarrhea concurrent with the ear infection - but that also coincides with the antibiotics and with teething for her, so it was hard to tell the cause.

She went through kind of a weird phase when she was congested & started coughing after a bottle - which made her throw up... Somehow, it almost seemed to turn into a habit for a couple of weeks.  It was as though she started this nervous coughing/throwing up thing for a while.  It seemed to just go away on its own -- but it was so frustrating and difficult at the time.

Sure hope they get something figured out for you guys, as none of those symptoms are any fun!
