DC Hotel/Bar/Restaurant rec's

I just moved to the area and have never been to DC.  DH and I have a rare opportunity to have a night out without the kids & want to take advantage of it.

I'm not into sushi or seafood and don't mind spending a little $$...other than that, we're open to anything. I'm just looking to have a nice weekend to have some fun!  I've been browsing travel websites, but there so many places that look great.

Re: DC Hotel/Bar/Restaurant rec's

  • Proof is great- and the Hotel Monaco is right near there. It is located in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area and is close to touristy things too.

Other favorite restaurants- Zatinya, Central or Tabard Inn (Dupont Circle)

Fun bars- if the weather is nice, the Georgetown Waterfront is a must for out of towners.

Other hotels- I think all the Kimpton Hotels are fun. Hotel George is near the Capitol and Union Station.

  • welcome to the area -- and adorable triplets! hooray!

I feel like this should be a sticky post (and maybe it already is) but... recommendataions here tend to the Kimpton hotels bc they're almosts always nice, and you can usually find an online deal for one.  So if you've truly got a free night of babysitting and can stay downtown... do it!

as for restaurants - there are far too many different options to consider... as well as different parts of town. what kind of food do you like? are you tying this to an event (like a concert) so we can give you recs for that part of town? Tom Sietsma's (Wash Post--also called WaPo here-- restaurant critic) recommendations are online and usually spot on in terms of price, value, etc.

good luck - and enjoy your time off!

Thanks for the rec's, I think I may have seen a couple of them mentioned on websites I was looking at, I will check out their menus!

Thanks!  I just moved here over we week ago, I will DEFINITELY enjoy my time off.  I pretty much hardly go anywhere unless we have family visiting to watch the kids, they are quite the handful now!

We're not going to an event, just looking for some drinks, a little sightseeing & a night out.  I'm not familiar with the different parts of town....but we like Italian, Asian, Mexican, Greek, steakhouse/grilles, pasta, chicken, nice atmosphere/great service...non-chain places.  We rarely go out without the kids to eat, so I'm excited to go somewhere other than Red Robin & Olive Garden ;)

I will check out that site online!

  • One restaurant experience I'd like to try is the PS7 7 course meal with 7 drinks for 77 dollars... You mentioned liking greek and mexican food - you might like one of the jose andres restaurants: zaytinya is really good. As is oyamel (try their cocktail with hibiscus ice!)

  • I like all of the recs so far in this post except for Central-we went a couple of months ago and I thought it had lost something.  If you like Indian Rasika is really good (must get the fried spinach appetizer).  I forget the name of it, but the people who own Proof opened up a second restaurant with a Spanish theme and the Washingtonian best restaurants edition said it's better than Proof.  We liked proof but I was pregnant when we went so I didn't really get to take advantage.

  • Ditto Rasika (the fried spinach is so good!) and Zaytinya. Personally my husband and I were not fans of Oyamel - it was fine, but nothing blew our minds and has us clamoring to go back anytime soon. Proof is really good.

In the Cap Hill/Eastern Market area is Cava Mezze. It's our favorite restaurant so far in the District.
