Recommend your Salon

My hair needs help. Its been breaking off, and my stylist (who personally, I love and don't want to leave her, because I feel like I'm cheating) doesn't seem to be much help. Her recommendation was to chop my hair off and start over, which is.not.happening.  I live in Corsicana, an hour form Dallas, so the further south or right up 75 the better. HELP!

Re: Recommend your Salon

  • I dont have a salon recommendation - my stylist lives in Frisco.  But, I wanted to ask if you take a multi-vitamin.  That seriously might help your hair from breaking off.  Also, do you normally have dry or oily hair?  You might benefit from a really good deep conditioning/repair treatment.
  • Is it damaged from coloring and using heating tools?

The reason I ask, is because this exact same thing happened to a friend of mine and her salon also told her if she wanted to get her healthy hair back, the best way would be to cut it off where it starts breaking off and start growing it back out, and to lay off the coloring and use a really good heat protecting stylin product before using blowdryers, straighteners, etc.

I remember because my friend cried for DAYS afterwards. She had just grown it out. But colored it all the time, so it was pretty damaged.

:-/. I don't have any recs because I go to a place that would be too far from you. Good luck, hope you can find a solution that doesn't involve cutting it. But, it may be the healthiest way and it always grows back.

This. I highlight. And flat iron every day. I have noticed its looking a little better. Switched to Aveda shampoo, only flat iron in the morning, and not at night when I shower. I air dry most of the way, then blow dry a little. I use a heat protectant from Sallies, do you have another you recommend?

And if I cut it  I'd have to cut it off at my chin! Its only a little past my shoulders now (well in the back, front is shorter). As vein as this sounds, its really really depressing. I don't even want to look in the mirror. And its probably not as bad as I see it in my head.

  • I had some damage due to heating tools and I started using It's a Ten products.  They are a bit pricey, but they really have made such a difference in my hair.  I buy them at Ulta.
  • I don't know if it will help, but I use BioSilk Silk Therapy every day on the ends of my hair...it really makes a difference.   A good color care shampoo and conditioner will help too (I use Matrix Biolage).   If you can use some new products and be extra careful with it for a few months you might be able to keep it healthy and get it grown out enough to chop off the bad part.

How often do you get trims?   Getting a 1" or so trim more often may help as well.

I also recently went back to mostly my natural color with only a few highlights....so now I only really have to get highlights every 2 months or so because the roots aren't really that big of a deal.

  • I used to wait about 2 months for a trim. I just got it trimmed a couple weeks ago. I'm going to start going for a trim once a month, then highlight as needed. When I flat iron, I've been trying to avoid the ends, hoping that will help. Thanks ladies!

I use a Redken product called align 12. You can find it at Ulta. My stylist recommended it. You can use it on wet hair before you blow dry, and on dry hair right before you straighten. It protects from heat and smooths the hair.

I also try to go every 6 weeks for a trim, and I don't blow dry/straighten my hair every day. I try to leave at least 1-2 days per week where I give it a break and let it air dry. If you can, try not to wash it every single day. I know that's hard for people who have oily hair.

    Anyway, that's my advice! GL!

  • On the days you don't wash do you condition?

I don't.   I don't even get it wet on those days.   If I'm working I will usually just pull it back into a low pony tail....sometimes I will flat iron it but that kind of defeats the purpose for me.

ETA:  Do you have a salon quality hair dryer?   I got one for Christmas and it dries my hair in less than 5 minutes.... way better and less damage than the Conair/Revlon kind that took me 15 minutes.

    I don't, no.

I normally don't do anything with it except pull it back in a ponytail. Normally I do this on days where I'm just lounging around the house and don't plan on going anywhere.

ETA: My hairdresser also suggests switching up your shampoo/conditioner brands every couple of months. Don't use the same thing for 6 months-a year at at a time.
