Smoke Smell Out of Washer
DH washed an article of clothing in our washer that was smoke filled. It's a sentimental garment that was left over a relatives house for years who was a chain smoker. Once I pulled it out of the washer the smell remained. We sent the machine through a clean wash cycle with oxi clean and left the door open for it to air out. It's not as bad, but it's still there. Would running vinegar get rid of the smell or do I have to you Afresh? I would prefer something eco-friendly and I can't find the ingredients for Afresh, but if that's what I have to do, then that's what I will do.
I'll also post this on the Green Living board.
Thanks
Re: Smoke Smell Out of Washer
I recommend filling each of the detergent/softener cups with white vinegar and adding another cup of white vinegar to the water as it is filling. Use a hot water wash cycle too.
As a second step (if the vinegar doesn't work) I would add a baking soda solution (1 cup baking soda to four cups water) to each of the detergent/softener cups. Again, use a hot water wash cycle too.
I find this two step process to be more effective than any commercial mixture. We will host several backyard bonfires at our house every summer and get a lot of picnic blankets very smoky scented and this works to get the smoky smell out of our washing machine.
Try doing a load of just a few rags and lots of baking soda. I got my washer and dryer from a friend who smoked and it worked. As for the dryer she luckily used the stick on Bounce stick so i wasn't that bad, I just washed down the outside of both mashines very good with bleach.
