Tornados

When I was teaching last night, we had tornado warnings. They hit western Mass, but my area was fine. They are very uncommon here, but I was thinking I wouldn't know what to do with all these kids. Think of a big open dance studio. There really isn't anything to hide under. Would we be screwed?

Re: Tornados

  • I heard about these tornadoes! That is crazy! I'm glad your area wasn't hit.

Is there a bathroom (with no windows) or large closet you all could run to in an emergency?

  • The bathroom is a good idea. The closets are jammed full of crap.

  • MH grew up in CT and he was telling me about this freak tornado that destroyed a chunk of his town back in the 80's or early 90's. Craziness! Luckily his house wasn't damaged.

I was thinking that if we ever got one here, it sucks that we don't have basements.

  • One of DH's friends was texting him last night saying they'd lost power because of some of the storms - and they're in the metro west area.  I vaguely remember the tornados the news was saying hit 3 years ago, but it's truly a strange weather phenomenon for the state.

  • Yeah, that's strange. You are more prone to tornados down there, yet have no where to go. The destruction is awful up here. Very sad.

  • We had severe thunder storms & the lights flickered, but luckily that was it. Driving home was very windy though.

  • At most of the schools I have taught at, the drill is to get away from the windows and have the kids get on their knees up against an interior wall, put their heads down facing the wall, and put their hands over their heads.  If there is an interior bathroom or closet that would be great too but in most of our cases, the classroom is just as is.
  • That's good to know, thanks. That's more practical than trying to cram kids into a single bathroom.
