Babies and dogs

Did any of you with dogs do anything special to introduce your dog to the baby? I've heard that you should let them smell the hospital blanket first and bring a treat for the dog when you come home with baby.

Any thoughts or tips?

TIA!

Re: Babies and dogs

  • My dog is super gentle, so I wasn't terribly worried about it. He was really excited when we brought the baby home. First I let him smell her clothes, then I let him smell her. He wasn't jealous, but he was protective and he stands guard over her when she's sleeping and such. They are BFF's!

Aw that's so cute! I think Lola will be fine too. I think she'll just be a little jealous at first since we give her soooo much attention now:)

  • Ask the Pets board.  There's some book they recommend but I can't remember what.

  • We have 2 dogs. I was not worried at all about Bandit but a little cautious of Princess. She's the leader and has been my baby for 6.5 years. We did the blanket thing. Kev brought one home the first night and left it on our bed and when he went back the next day she was curled up in it. She's very smart and knew something was up. When we got home, we brought the dogs outside then brought the baby in. I face each dog attention while Kev took Nate out of his seat. Then I brought the dogs in and had them smell him. They were totally fine. Now they are great too. It took princess a bit to get used to being careful where/when she could jump into our lap or whatever but she's got the hang of it now. She kisses him a lot. Bandit likes to be wherever Nate is. The first few days, bandit would sleep outside his bedroom door but now he doesn't. But anytime we go in there, he comes too.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Ebitda def knew something was going on before Teaghan was born. We also did the blanket thing and when we brought her in the house my mom brought Ebi back on his leash and we introduced them. Of course he wanted to lick her all over cause he loves to lick but we kept saying only her ears and toes and that is the two parts he lick when he can.

We werent worried about him acting out towards her but he has shown some jealousy by destroying some of her things like a pacifier and a blanket.

  • Thanks all! Tonia...that's so cute that your dog was cuddled up in the baby's blanket! I hope Lola does that too! :)
  • I'm not terribly worried about Cooper's reaction to the baby, but I'm worried he may act out on some of the baby's items if he feels jealous.  I think he may do what Sara's dog did  and chew up a blanket or pacifier or something.  He may be just fine though. He already has to share our attention with the cats, so he may not notice all that much if we add a baby to the mix.

We'll probably just bring the baby in the house in its carseat, set it down in front of Cooper, and guide him as to what's appropriate.  (If he tries to lick the baby, we'll scold him -- this dog occasionally eats poo, I don't want him licking my kid), but we'll let him know it's fine to lay quietly next to the baby, etc.

I'm most worried about the cats.  They are very sweet and I know they won't mind the baby, but I'm afraid they'll try to cuddle with it, and I have a fear that they could suffocate the baby if they lay near its face. The foil trick has worked pretty well for them, but once we remove the foil from the baby's crib, pack N play, etc, I think they'll go back to jumping in there.  We may just have to resort to shutting doors at night, but hopefully they'll learn boundaries.

Tara- I meant to tell you our experience. Our cats watned nothing to do with Charlotte when we had things setup and when we brought her home. Now that she is around more and they realize she isnt leaving they have had a little issues with jealousy. They sleep on the changing table on the pack n play but we are alright with that. We have those reusable pads that we flip over to keep hair off.  As for the other issues we did have one issue with marking the spot she was laying on the floor but we put down blankets before we lay her down now and those have stopped. Hopefully it wont be too hard for yours. Our ragdoll hasnt had a single issue its our tabby that we have issues with.

  • We didnt really do anything special.  We gave the baby blanket to my parents and Chris' parents so they could let the dogs smell it respectively, and then we brought Sam home.  They both smelled her over and then seemed pretty indifferent.  She gets licks from Freya every and again, and Loki will smell her bum when she poops, but they really don't pay her much mind.  Although, now that she's moving more, Loki's getting a little apprehensive, so we're keeping an eye on it.
