auctioning off virginity = "feminist"???

Woman Auctioning Off Her Virginity Calls Herself a Feminist

And yet more proof that you can use feminism as an argument for anything. Today, 30 years after the women?s movement has achieved absolute victory (in much the same way we accomplished our mission in Iraq back in 2003), women are not only able to freely sell their bodies via the World Wide Web, but are able to intelligently discuss their prostitution goals with supermodels like Tyra Banks, who clearly insinuate that virgins shouldn?t dress so ?sexy.?

Just like Palin, 22-year-old Natalie Dylan (pictured) is living proof that anyone with a uterus can brand herself a feminist, even as your actions risk setting the women?s movement back about 50 years. Speaking on the Tyra Banks Show, Dylan explained that her interest in making some big bucks at Nevada?s Moonlight Bunny Brothel by auctioning off her virginity (the highest bid so far is $3.8 million) is mainly academic, stemming from her commitment to feminist studies. Dylan is writing her college thesis on ?the dichotomous relationship between virginity and prostitution.?  That is indeed quite a dichotomy?just the kind of dichotomy that the friendly fellas over at the Moonlight Bunny Brothel will be very interested in, I?m sure.

Check out a clip of Dylan speaking to Tyra on Jezebel.

Re: auctioning off virginity = "feminist"???

  • ...after the Tyra jump...

Natalie Dylan, the 22-year-old woman auctioning off her virginity through the Moonlight Bunny Ranch brothel in Nevada, was on Tyra today. (She's had 5,000 bidders, with the highest bid so far being $3.8 million.) Automatically, when reading the headlines about Natalie, the initial reaction would be that she's in it for the money, or that she's just a liar out to get some attention. This speaks volumes about the way our society thinks about women's sexuality, and that's exactly why Natalie has chosen to go on this journey. She's a feminist, working on her master's thesis on the dichotomous nature between virginity and prostitution. So does this make Natalie the first official virgin/whore? She explains her experiment in the clip above, and answers Tyra's stupid questions after the jump.

  • Um, I think we can safely say selling sex for money =/= feminist, however you try to package it.

  • I don't think that selling sex automatically makes people unfeminist. ?There's a big debate in the feminist community over how they feel about sex workers.

This auctioning off is fairly old news, though. ?I remember hearing about it in Japan. ?From a very utilitarian point of view, it is feminist. ?She's getting paid for doing what she wants to do. ?But, from most bloggers I've read, they think it's a pretty stupid idea, especially as it glamorizes virginity which isn't really a feminist thing.
