Interview Question

At an interview recently I was asked when the last time I cut my hair was. She had a list of questions in front of her and wrote down my answers on it so I don't think it's because my hair was long and didn't look nice (I have medium length hair). I'm just wondering if anyone has ever been asked this question and what they're trying to find out from this question. Thanks

Re: Interview Question

  • I have never been asked that question. I have no idea what they're looking for.

  • I've never been asked that question, but my hunch is that it's a question thrown in to "keep you honest." I had an interview recently where there were professional questions and personal questions peppered together. The interviewer later told me his "tactic" was to ensure people were staying honest. He said that in an interview, people often put on a show and exaggerate their professional accomplishments, but he'd heard that if you ask someone about their family, their pets, (maybe their hair), etc. you might be more honest in the professional questions.

    So that's just a hunch.

  • Interesting... never had that one asked before. I'm currently growing my hair long to donate it but still can regular trims.

I recently went on an interview and the most personal question asked was about hobbies and other interests and yes, he wrote them down.

  • Interesting! I have been asked about hobbies but never been asked that!
  • If it was one of the first questions asked, my guess would be it was to put you at ease.  Questions where you know the answer and you are not worried about being judged on or about tend to do that.

I guess it could have to do with the industry.  Is it an appearance focused field?  Hair stylist or salon related?  Or if it deals with food preparation I can see a question about hair related hygiene

  • Never been asked that!  THat would make me uncomfortable.  I hate my hair - why would I want to talk about it in a job interview?  Ask me about my hobbies, sure, because I chose them!  I didn't choose my pain in the ass hair!

I would probably look at the interviewer point blank, give her an honest answer, and then politely say, "That is a most unexpected question.  May I ask why it was included in the question set?"
