PW (sorry) Dog people

I feel so bad for our pup Daisy. She wakes up in the morning STARVING I mean crying, howling, barking at like 5am, not because she has to go outside, but because she's hungry.

We feed her the recommended amount, should we feed her more? Spread it out more? I don't know what to do, but these 5am feedmeImsohungryImaydie howl/barkfests are killing me.

Re: PW (sorry) Dog people

  • Are you just feeding her once in the morning? Try spreading out feedings to 2 or even 3 times a day. Plus, sometimes a small treat or snack right before bed will help with the early morning cries. To be honest, our dogs didn't start waking up at normal hours until almost 2 years old. They still throw up in the morning if they don't eat on time. Just hungry lil buggers. Usually the bag doesn't tell you the right amount to feed the dogs, so do what works best. As long as she's not packing on a ton of weight, she can eat more. Our dogs get almost 6 cups a day, way past what's recommended, and the vet still tells us their weight is almost under.

  • One of my cats used to wake me up every morning at 4 or 5 am because she wanted to be fed. I bought her a programmable automatic feeder. It drops a specified amount of food (I think in 1/4 cup increments) at whatever time I designate (up to 3 meals per day). This solved the problem for me. She learned to that she would be fed when she heard the feeder drop her food rather than trying to wake me up.
  • Bailey does the same thing, she wakes me up everyone morning between 4 and 5am wanting me to feed her. It doesn't matter that I just fed her at 10pm or that she has eaten several times during the day, she always wakes up hungry.

I like Amie's suggestion about the automatic feeder, I think I need to look into one of those!

  • I've never had that problem. I always keep food in Mac's dish so he's always able to eat whenever he's hungry. He's the perfect weight and doesn't eat like he's starving. It's what we did to our pets growing up as well and we've never had problems.
  • We got her a special bowl today to slow her eating down. we're going to try giving her a snack before bed tonight to see if it works. I just feel horrible because I think she's in actual physical pain. The crying is terrible.
