His deployment is quickly approaching. I've been trying not to think about it b/c it makes me so sad, but I need to figure out what I am going to do before I run out of time. His going away party is June 18th. He currently is scheduled to leave July 11th, but that's the 3rd date he has gotten so I wouldn?t be surprised if it changes again (up until last week it was July 5th). So whatever I do doesn?t HAVE to be done in time for the party but it would be nice.
Should I give him something to take with him (is he allowed to take things with him?) or should I wait and send him something while he is there? I will definitely write to him will he is there. I was thinking about making him a photo book or like a Smallish poster collage with family pics on it. WDYT?
Re: What should I give/make my brother?
have you ever heard of/participated in Operation Baking Gals? if you google that, you'll get the site...you can sign up to send a baking care pkg to troops overseas. Also, you can sign up to be the lead on a group...and i think you can pick or nominate a soldier to sponsor. it's really neat....i've sent some care packs over a few times. while it might not go directly to your brother, it will support a soldier somewhere...and that might be nice.
i'd give him a nice card and then send him something once he gets there. i think they miss a lot of comfort things that we take for granted. q-tips, those drink mixes you can put in your water bottle, granola bars, wet wipes, etc.
Oh thats good to know! I've not heard of that one. I have done anysoldier.com before. Hmm maybe when I get his address over there Ill set up one for him. If I dont Ill post it on here to see if anyone would like to participate!!
I asked my H if he'd rather stuff to take with or shipped once there and he said shipped once there. They switch planes a lot when deploying and can easily get stuck so they limit their baggage a lot and half the time they have to carry it all themselves.
I think if you did a small photo album that would be great. Maybe you can put a card or a note in there that you'll be sending him things along the way to keep his spirits up.
H also says it depends on the person on what they would want, but he liked getting beef jerky and sudoku books. He also really liked this Nivea foot lotion stuff I sent him b/c his feet were all dry and cracky from walking around.
Ok this is what I was thinking....
