IVF for multiples?

have you ever heard of people doing IVF not because of fertility issues but because they want twins? what do you think of that? (i just saw someone mention this on tv, i am not considering this, btw).

Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.

Re: IVF for multiples?

  • It is personally not for me, but if you have the money to pay for it as well as for your multiples then more power to you.  This of course is as long as you aren't trying to be the next octomom or have another really high multiple count that is dangerous to you and the babies.  I think trying for twins isn't that big of a deal though, but again it isn't something I would do for myself.
  • A friend of mine did it.  She was a mom to 1 and then did IVF to have twins, which she had in the fall.  She's now got 3 under 2yrs.

She's the type that always wanted to be a mom.  Not just, 'oh that'd be great', but like 'I need to be a mom asap'.  She turned 35 in Jan and wanted to be "done" having kids by 35, but got a "late" (her words not mine) start 33 when #1 was born so felt she needed to "hurry".  Again, I'm not saying 35 is 'late' or a problem, just sharing her POV.

  • As a person struggling with infertility and struggling to find ways to pay for IVF so that I can just maybe have one child... <br> allow me to ----->image on this issue.

    1) Any ethical and decent IVF clinic does extensive counseling on singleton vs multiple births. A LOT of clinics wont even put back 2 embryo's even if you want them to unless you are advanced maternal age or have a risk factor that may cause this to be your one and only pregnancy. Any clinic that willing takes on patients who want to pay out of pocket to have twins so they can be "one and done" with their family have serious ethical issues and make the rest of the IVF community look bad. The CDC keeps very close track of IVF multiple birth rates as multiples are considered a negative outcome to IVF. Many IVF clinics advertise their low multiple rates to prove they are better then the clinic next door.

    2) Twins = greater chance of prematurity. According to the March of Dime 60% of all twins are born prematurely. Is 60% chance of prematurity risk your instant family??

3). Twins = higher chance for low birth weight and intrauterine growth retardation. Both of which can cause respiratory problems amount other things. Is this worth an instant family??

    4) Twins = greater chance of Preeclampsia and Gestational Diabetes?s. Is putting your health and your babies? health worth an instant family??

    5) Recent studies are suggesting that non identical twins conceived through IVF are at a higher risk for birth complications and birth defects then naturally occurring non identical twins.

6). Just b/c you put back 2 embryos doesn?t mean you will get 2 babies. You could miss carry one or both. OR one or both embryos could divide leaving you with triplets or quads. 90% of all triplets are born premature according to the March of Dimes.

Ok I will come down off my soap box now. Obviously I am extremely envious of anyone who can say ?I?m going to go through IVF just so I can have twins?. IVF is no walk in the park. It is extremely tolling both mentally and physically and I wouldn?t wish it upon anyone who wants to start a family. I think that is a cavalier and selfish attitude. I also wonder of those people who say ?I?m going through IVF so I can have twins?, how many of them HAD to go through IVF but are trying to play it off as their choice.   Now on the flip side of this. I think it?s ok that if IVF is really the only option for one to start a family and they fully understand the risk involved with twins/multiples that if they want 2 embryos put back they should have 2 embryos back. IVF is soooo expensive ($$ and emotionally) that I can understand never wanting to have to do it again. For the record if/when we get to IVF I want to have 2 embryos put back in my uterus.

    convinced!

btw i did find it sort of strange even before your post. especially given how cavalier the person was who said it. it just sounded funning to me. i wanted to see what you guys had to say because i didn't know if this was common practice and i was just out of the loop. my concern would be, and i know nothing about IVF, would the couple be upset if they got 3 or 4 or 5... i mean can they control how many you have? i would think not if someone like kate gosselin had 6 when they only wanted 1 more.

  • BMW you definitely made me reconsider my position on it.  You make some very excellent points that I didn't really think about.
  • I had never heard of this.

While I agree with all of BMW's points, I still kind of think it's up to them to weigh the options and make their own choice. I wouldn't choose this for myself, but I don't feel comfortable telling others the choice they should make.

I can see both sides to this, for sure.

it's a tough one. i think if it wasn't risky to have them then i'd say to each their own and then give them the side eye. i just don't like the idea of not leaving some things up to nature but i don't like restricting people either. but then the fact that it's not the most healthy choice, that bothers me.

  • I bet big money a lot of celebrities do this and don't need IVF... I also bet they select genders. A little convenient J Lo and Angelina had boy/girl twins.... Lots of twins in Hollywood.

I would never, ever do this... (for the sake of having multiples) and hell... Id be freaked out getting pregnant naturally with twins... 1 at a time is quite enough for me!!Seems crazy to me.. But like ppl I don't think it's fair that other people couldn't do it if they wanted.

  • My personal point of view is that twins are double the handful, and double the trouble. I have identical twin nephews (6 today.. where does time go?!) and they are holyhell terrors! I feel bad for their mom. They. however, were natural. I asked her about IVF for twins and her take on it.. her response was "seriously? someone is nutso enough to go out of their way to do this to themselves?" I have to agree.
  • WHAAAA? First of all, why would you try to have twins? Thats just crazy. Anyway Ive never heard this but now Im interested.

Kate Gosselin  didn't do IVF. She did IUI. Here is the down and dirty difference. IVF you are stimulated, a bunch of eggs grow but they are harvested before your body can release them, then the are fertilized and usually 1 or 2 embryos are placed back in the uterus. IUI you take the same medication as IVF but usually in smaller doses. The eggs mature inside of you and your Dr is SUPPOSED to carefully monitor you to make sure your body doesn't release too many eggs. Then the sperm is injected inside of you and nature takes its course. Kate Gosselin has PCOS and released too many eggs and her Dr. didn't cancel the cycle for some reason.

Octomom had IVF and her quack ass doctor put 12 freaking embryos back in her. He is currently on trial to loose his medical license.

I guess my biggest point is IVF cost between $10,000-$15,000 per cycle with average success rates of roughly 30-40%.  Its not the average person saying "Im doing IVF for twins". I still tend to believe that people say they are doing IVF so they can have twins just to cover up the fact that they had to IVF in the first place.

I have no doubts celebs do it as a quick family fix though.
