Festival of the Arts

because we haven't discussed it, really...

Festival starts in 20 minutes!  What are you planning on doing there this year?  What food/bands/events are you looking forward to?

I have class from 8-5 tomorrow.  We'll probably go right after to walk around and have dinner.  I hope that I can finally get Willa to go into the kids art area this year.  I can't go with her, and she's been nervous in the past.  Jim's friend is in a band called "Four Lincolns."  They play on Sunday, we'll probably go for that.

I'll also make my annual trip to the Buddist Association booth for their vegetarian egg roll.

Hope to spot a few of you there!

Re: Festival of the Arts

  • Well, I'm currently eating a falafel that I just bought there.  Other than my lunchtime stop, I'm not sure yet if we'll be back this year.  We'll see how the weekend unfolds.
  • Noah and I are going tonight!  My DH really hates crowds and decided that he needs to cut the grass tonight instead.  Party Pooper!!  I always look forward to the shrimp skewers...but now a veggie egg roll sounds devine!  Good luck with getting Willa to go in the art area!  I bet she will have fun if she can get up the courage.  I was the SAME way when I was a kid!

I have no set act that I want to see this year...I have heard good things about Four Lincolns...wish we could go Sunday too!

Oh and if you go tonight (Or we can end up making it Sunday after our party)...we are a little hard to miss.  Look for the baby in the sling on his mommy's hip with a bright blue Plagiocephaly Helmet on!Smile

  • We always like getting the Bosnian food - Cevapi, cheese pie, etc. This will be Henry's first year to eat the food - looking forward to him trying some new things.

Uh - and I was checking out the website and there are a few things that I think I need to experience. Like bacon dusted fries.

Really, we need to organize a GNO for festival for us with hubbies who don't like festival. I'm not even attempting to ask TH to go this year. I don't know if I am brave enough to bring two kids by myself.

GRSP - what time are you going on Sunday? Do you think if we asked Willa to bring Allison to the kids area, would she go then. My only fear would be that Allison would be a "little sheet" about something and I would have to break the rules and grab her out of the area.

The thought of going downtown with mass crowding intimidates me.  Where do you park? I'm assuming you park a ways away and walk?  I know if I asked Nick to go, it would be a disaster.  We tried going to Taste of GR last year, and it did not go well.  I felt like I was with a whiney 4 year old.  We ended up being there for about 25 minutes before I got fed up with him.

I haven't been downtown to festival in over 10 years, and I didn't even experience anything.  The last time I went was because my high school choir was performing, and after we sang I went home.

Did any of you go to a concert in middle school/high school and the venue had the parents room. A place where the adults could hang out. I think Gardellas or another bar needs to have the "crabby husband room".  We could drop off our husbands and they could get a glass of beer.

Wop - look on their website for parking locations and there are a ton of sites. I always recommend to people who are not comfortable driving around downtown to park on the outskirts (in a populated lot). There are several lots by the YMCA....I "think" they have shuttles from there.

  • The problem I have isn't that Jim doesn't want to go.  He thinks he does.  But then we get down there and he doesn't know what to do with himself.

We'll probably be at festival at about 6 on Saturday, and 1 pm on Sunday.  I like the idea of Willa being in the craft are with a friend.  And if I phrased it as she could help Allison, she might be more inclined.  The thought of Henry and Mia together there has me worried (like winking eye and smirk worry).  They could get in so much trouble!

I plan on stopping by briefly tonight, just so I can get a glass or two of nimbupani from the Krishnas. But we're doing the Parade of Homes the rest of the evening.

The two of us are planning to go for lunch and the afternoon...and maybe dinner...on Saturday - just hang out, people watch, see what we see...and of course drink some more nimbupani.

On Sunday we plan to come back after the Whitecaps game to catch my friend's band, Common Shiner, at 5 p.m. on the Calder Stage. They're fantastic and you're all invited! Oh, and I'll have some more nimbupani. I seriously look forward all year to this stuff.

If any of you with less-than-willing husbands want to meet up with us, I promise we can be entertaining.

Also, holy crap, I just looked at the food booth listings. Citrus BBQ pulled chicken sandwich? Sold.

You could do that - or you could also park near a Rapid bus stop and then take the bus the rest of the way in. That is very convenient.

I'm sorry you feel intimidated by crowds...we always have a ton of fun, but I get that it's not for everyone.

  • Chymes - What is this nimbupani of which you speak, er, type?

Chymes - What is this nimbupani of which you speak, er, type?

It's described on the food booth list as such: ice water, fresh lemon, ginger, rosewater

My tastebuds find it to be somewhat like lemonade, but very aromatic and refreshing. The rosewater in it is to die for, and the ginger and other flavors make for a very unique beverage. I've searched recipes online but have never found one that matches what they serve at Festival.

Is it pronounced somewhat phonetically at least?  Just wondering how I would order it without sounding like a fool.

I say "nim-boo-PAH-nee" and no one has ever laughed. They laugh when I ask for very little ice so that I get as much of the drink as possible, but that is more laughing WITH me than AT me.
