Strawberry picking or zoo this weekend?

The phone message at Homestead farms says there are strawberries and sour cherries but I'm not sure if the picking is good.  Which would you choose b/w picking and zoo?

  • Strawberries.  They won't be available much longer, and the zoo will be there all summer.  :-)

  • We went to Butler's last weekend to pick strawberries and it was fun (but hot - no shade in the patch!). My coworker went to Homestead and said the fruit was only so-so. But agree with pp - get strawberries now while you can! They're so much tastier than from the store.

  • i agree with strawberries... BUT. I went to Homestead last weekend, and I was underwhelmed which is disappointing because we are Homestead die-hards and go a few times a year. We usually try to get there right at opening on a Saturday, but with the kiddo we wound up arriving closer to 11:30. There was slim pickings for excellent fruit, and not much better for mediocre fruit. Quite a bit of rotting fruit on the plants that was resting on the very wet ground.

Sounds like Butlers might be a better option.

  • We went to Millers last weekend and it was really picked over.  The berries we bought were delicious, BUT, with a toddler helping, scarce good berries, etc - in an hour we only picked one pound.  It might just be better to go to the Farmers Market...

yeah i was kind of worried about this.  I do agree the berries taste so much better but maybe a farmer's market is the way to go. Boy do I miss the awesome Baltimore market under the expressway (terrible location but awesome pickings at such great prices)

  • We went to butler's last weekend & it was *easy* picking.  In an hour, my husband (wearing the baby, so we didn't have to deal with a mobile kid) & I picked 16 lbs.
