Intro/Question

Hi everyone! I'm a newbie (clearly) and I just wanted to say hello and also ask a question.

I've been searching high and low to find a message board where I could ask/talk about my recent decision to walk on the green side. My personal goal is to not purchase the traditional household/beauty items as I run out, but to make my own (or be lazy and use Dr. Bronner's...or Dr. BONER as my DH calls it). If that made any sense. It's midnight, give me a break. :-)

Anyway, my question: I recently ran out of my favorite Body Shop lotion and after looking at all of the parabens and phthalates in it, I'm glad I did. I "made" new stuff by mixing a few drops of lavender with sweet almond oil, but I'm finding that it's actually drying my hands out pretty bad, my palms in particular. Does anyone have any advice about what I can mix to remedy this? I was thinking of omitting the sweet almond oil for EVOO as I'm thinking about doing the Oil Cleaning Method next for face washing. LONGEST question ever! Sorry.

Was just looking for input from you lovely ladies. My new lifestyle isn't really something that most of my friends are on board with, so talking to them would be pretty fruitless. Hopefully I've found a place where I can talk about my "hippie" ways and not be judged. I will say, my DH is pretty on board with everything thus far, which is a huge surprise...and I'm rambling. Let me apologize now for that...I'm a talker. :-)

Re: Intro/Question

  • I don't have a good answer to your question since I still use better-than-mainstream, but still mostly "conventional" lotions and moisturizers--I haven't had the guts to try the OCM yet.

I respond only to let you know that I know how you feel--my circle of friends are all still 100% conventional, DH and I are the only ones that are green in any sort of sense.  When we have friends come over and they ask for things like trash bags--which we don't buy anymore--it makes me realize just how "green" we are because we just use things like old bread bags since that's sufficient for the amount of actual trash we usually produce in a week.

You aren't alone, there are lots of wonderful ladies on this board that will be able to help with your journey.

  • This really isn't going to answer your question either but I have a product recommendation.  I haven't quite broken down to making my own cleaners/lotions; however, I use Origins Cleansing Oil.  I use it 1x/day (at night) when my skin acts up--I have VERY oily/acne-prone skin but it sometimes gets scaly and has dry patches and I can't do anything to get it to go away (except use this cleanser).  ANYWAY...I think it is only $18.  It is a combo of various oils.  I love the smell.  Very earthy.  You may see if you can get a sample.  Maybe test a cleansing oil and how you react, before buying all the oils, combining them and then realizing that your skin doesn't agree....
  • Hello and welcome!  I'm a HUGE hippie, so I think you're in good company here.  I don't have a good product/homemade recommendation for lotion, as I'm lucky enough not to have dry skin.  I think I use Aveeno moisturizer maybe 2-3 times during the dryest part of the winter.  Good luck on your green journey, and feel free to ask whatever questions you like!

  • Thank you guys for responding! I really just wanted "lotion" for my legs after shaving. I'll definitely look into the Origins face wash though. It's hard trying to figure out what to completely replace and make myself or what is just easier to buy. I used to use Aveeno lotion and I'm not sure why I quit...I'll probably just buy a small bottle and use it sparingly.

I didn't even think about the trash bags! Well, replacing them anyway. The other day my DH was trying to take a half empty (or half full LOL!) trash bag out and I wouldn't let him. Haha! Luckily, he's really chill and finds it easier to just not argue with me. After I read that you had replaced trash bags, I ran that by him...don't think that one will fly. Haha!

  • Welcome -- it sounds like you've found the place you're looking for :)

I use OCM.  I started with the recommended castor oil + EVOO, then after a while switched to jojoba oil.  Now i'm using avocado oil and like it even better.  I've heard that almond oil is great for skin, but i'm happy with what i'm using, and it sounds like it's not working for you.

I haven't started the OCM yet, but I just ran out of face wash like two days ago. I'll be starting it this weekend and I'll keep the avocado oil in mind. I'm assuming it's more of a 'play with it until you get it right' kind of thing. Do you still use equal parts castor and avocado? I was thinking about starting out with a 2:1 since my face is kinda oily and I sweat a lot.

Yeah, it depends on your skin, how much makeup you wear, etc.  I only used castor oil with EVOO; jojoba and avocado i use on their own.
