I think I posted awhile back about finding a random credit card in default on DH's credit report. He had a credit card with them in 2009 that we paid off and closed. When we checked his credit, it showed that we supposedly opened another one the very next month and wracked up $500 in interest and fees. There weren't any actual charges on it though.
They had their fraud department look into it, but are now saying that it's our debt and have already sent it off to a collection agency. But we never got any bills or statements, and they can't tell us when it was opened or if it was ever used at all.
They did send us some random statements that showed no purchases were ever made. (Duh, because we didn't have the card and didn't even know about it!) We got statements for the card we closed back when it was open and in use, so I think it's BS that we never got one for this other card that we supposedly opened literally a month after. (I specifically remember when this happened because we had a huge fight about the CC's, which he'd been hiding from me, and I chased him around our apartment with scissors until he handed over the card to be cut up).
So DH is going to call them back to see if we can settle it with them by paying in full for a lower amount and having them take it out of collection and off his credit. I'm so pissed because we've been working really hard at cleaning up his credit but forgot to check it last year. Stupid credit cards!
Re: So ticked off
This sounds really odd to me still. Maybe I just don't get it...but why can't the credit card company send you the transaction history?
Why would you pay it in full if you never used it?
Sorry...I am really dense this morning, I just don't get it?
In any case, this sh!t is frustrating, that I totally get- I remember when I was paying off 2 HUGE credit cards I had 3-4 years ago- OMG, PIA because I went with a debt consolidation (never again) and holy crap it was annoying...

Yea-I've heard of CC bullying people into paying bills that were not correct.
I am a little confused here-do you think it could be your debt or are you pretty sure its credit card fraud?
That's what I was thinking, could it be CC fraud? How frustrating, I hope they figure it out.

I'm thinking the exact same thing. I don't think you should pay for any of it. I think that yall really need to fight this and demand that they give you some kind of history of some sort. I just wouldn't pay $500 towards something that I had no idea about. I hope this gets resolved really soon.
Ok so here's the update: DH managed to settle with the collection agency for about 1/2 of the amount, so yay! They'll send a letter to the CC saying we paid in full and it will come of his credit.
After taking a second look at his credit report, I think this card actually does belong to him. I think it's the one that I cut up and *thought* I closed after we paid it off right after the wedding. They said it was opened in 10/08, which would match up to the one he had. I'm still pissed that they'd never send any kind of statement or notice to us when it went in default a year ago.
Lesson learned: check your credit every year, no if's and's or but's.
