Toddler regression w/ new baby...anyone else??

Jake is amazing when he's interacting directly w/ Katie and clearly loves her so much more than I thought possible at this age.  However, he's been regressing in ALL areas the last month.  His behavior is worse (more tantrums, defiance, horrid daycare dropoffs), doesn't eat as well, has a hard time behaving in the tub, and whines a LOT.  Any other moms going through this after adding a baby to the family??  It's strange because it didn't start until Katie was about 2 months old, but it's definitely in full swing.  I feel badly for him and we're super frustrated, especially at dinner time when it all comes to a head   :o(.

  • Obviously I don't have experience with having 2 kids, but it sounds totally normal to me. Typical 2 year old behavior (we are seeing a lot of what you mentioned as well) with the continuing adjustment to a new sibibling is sure to result in some difficulties. It's awesome that he is doing so well with her 1:1! Hang in there!! You are all doing the best you can and things will improve soon!

  • I think it sounds like he's a two year old.  Sorry to say, there's a lot of whining and tantrums in your future.

As long as it's normal, I can handle it!

  • Yes. Lots of melt downs over the past week, refusing to nap or sleep at all. I think combine that with the terrible twos and its a doosy!

  • When Ellie hit two months, things got more difficult around here, too...that's when the jealousy seemed to kick in.  If Ellie cried, Owen would whine and say, "Put Ellie dooooown!  I need a hug!!"  He hit or tried to push her on occasion if she was in my arms and he wanted to be close to me (especially if she was crying).  He also had a couple of bad daycare pickups during that month, crying as soon as he saw me and needing to cling to me for a while.  His DCP said he was acting out and falling apart a bit more there, too.

Then at three months, it seemed to go away mostly (although he still does the hitting/pushing thing occasionally).  Daycare is back to normal, and I no longer get the instant fake crying when the baby is upset.  However, he is definitely more whiney across the board, and has more bad wake-ups lately, always crying for me -- if MH goes in to see him instead, he throws a tantrum.

Long story short, yep, it's normal.  And hopefully it will clear up a bit for you like it did for us.  But, as pp said...they're two, so a lot of this would be happening regardless of a new sibling, and we're in for the long haul on some of this behavior.  Fun times! :)

So nice to hear we're not alone!!!  Jake is OBSESSED with me the past month too...forgot to mention that.  He constantly says "I need my mommy".  He really knows how to tug at my heartstrings...a whiney tantrum is one thing, but when he says he wants me specifically and cries real tears, it's a whole different ballgame.

This is where we're at. Luke only wants Mom and freaks if I go anywhere.

  • Wow we have a lot of little Oedipus Rex's on here!!  It was funny because tonight MH was joking around saying our dog Sadie has a boyfriend because she had a playdate w/ a boy dog.  Then he jokingly asked Jake if he has a girlfriend, and he said yes...MOMMY!!  Haha.  DH was like "you know I'm married to mommy right??" it was so funny.

Ha! I felt that way at first...the "I need a hug" really killed me and I was always putting Ellie down and saying "Of course you can have a hug Buddy!"  Then after the 50th time or so I was like "You're full of soup.  You're fine."  All my sympathy went out the window.  :)  (The crying wake-ups do still get me, though.)
