Bets on SCOTUS resignations?

What are the odds that Stevens announces his resignation on Jan. 21? I wouldn't be surprised to see Ginsberg or Souter announce by the end of this term or sometime during the next one. I would think they'd be interested in doing it before the '10 midterms because of the current balance of the Senate.

  • I think Stevens will announce sometime in late January that he's resigning at the end of the term. I think Ginsburg & Souter might stick around for one more.

    That's my bet too.

I'm so happy that they can retire, guilt free.  Stevens is 89 and Ginsburg is 79.  I'm sure they enjoy serving, but I'm sure this election comes as a major relief to them.

  • Stevens has been holding on for a Dem President.  The smartest thing he could is resign on January 20.  The Rs are damaged goods right now and would be fighting a massive wave of anti-conservative sentiment amongst voters that would make it difficult to be too obstructionist with Obama's selection.  However, this sentiment won't last long.

I also believe that Ginsburg and Souter will resign while Obama is in office.  Scalia and Thomas currently are looking into life-expanding technology.

    Ha! That's hilarious.
