is_it_over_yet and other PA people...Ed Rendell?

What are your thoughts on him?

He's been making the rounds on all the shows, first for HRC and now for Obama, and I've been very impressed.  He seems smart and dedicated.

So, I'm curious what he's like as a governor?  I'm wondering what kind of future he'll have nationally.

Re: is_it_over_yet and other PA people...Ed Rendell?

  • True story: when I worked in Center City, I was walking down the street one day and saw a piece of trash blowing down the street.  A man in front of me bent over, picked it up, and put it in the nearest trash can.  As he turned to throw the trash away, I saw that it was Ed Rendell.

This was while he was still mayor of Philly and that's how much he loves Philly and his job.  He is credited with cleaning up the city and making it a place to move into, rather than out of.  He does a regular local sports talk show on cable and is whip-smart and very funny.  He is Philly, through and through.

Since becoming Governor, he hasn't been remarkable, but has made no big mistakes that I can remember and is generally viewed favorably, at least amongst my peeps.

On the national scene, his biggest mistake was telling Al Gore to concede before he should have.  Some say this tipped the public sentiment toward accepting that Bush won.

IMO, he doesn't have the polish required to be a national player, at least as a politician, because he is sooo Philly.  (I say this with love, of course).  I think he would do very well behind the scenes or in an appointed position.

  • Personally, I loved him until our primary.  He was very hurtful and harsh to the Obama campaign while speaking on behalf of HRC.  Being deeply entrenched in the Obama campaign I felt very betrayed after being a very vocal Rendell defender.  He did come around after the primary, but for me the damage was done.

I think his biggest accomplishment in the state is providing healthcare for the uninsured.  One of his biggest campaign promises was to reduce property taxes.  He has not really produced on this and I think it is affecting his popularity.  His plan was to use slot machine tax dollars but he has not been sucuessful because local school districts do not want to give up control of local tax rates.  We recently received a rebate of $200, but this is just a small dent in our $4,000 tax bill.

  • I should also add that many said he never stood a chance at the Governorship because he is a Philly boy and Pittsburgh hates us.  He worked his tail off to convince Pgh that he would represent the western half of the state as well, and has done a very good job of being a PA governor, not just a Philly/east side governor.
  • Interesting, thanks!

I'm sure we'll start seeing more of him...making the rounds on Meet the Press and whatnot.  I wonder if Obama will give him a cabinet job.
