has anyone lived in Alaska?

My fiance's first post is in Alaska. We moved our wedding date up so that we would be married and have paper work done before he moves. I will have a year left of graduate school and will stay in Texas. I am really scared to move there. For one, I have never lived outside of Texas. Two, I take care of my grandfather. Three, I have heard that securing a job on base is impossible. Four, IT WILL BE COLD!!! I just don't know what to expect.

If anyone has been there before I could really use some reassurance and advice.

Thanks!

Re: has anyone lived in Alaska?

  • FIL was stationed there twice in the 90s.  H's entire family loved it so much the first time that they switched orders with people to go back.  H still talks about it all the time and really wants to retire there.  We'll see.

  • I have never lived in Alaska, or even been there, but, I thought I would add that everyone, and I mean every single person, I know who has lived in Alaska loves it there. Most, even moved back at the first opportunity. I am not exactly sure what the charm is, but hopefully it will be better than you have imagined.

     Congrats on getting married!

  • The people I've met who've been stationed in Alaska have LOVED it.  That's all I really know about it though.  Look at it as an adventure.  You have a year to get things in order for your grandfather so hopefully that's a smooth transition too.
I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.
  • Alaska is nice, Im sure you will love the adventure!
  • BIL is stationed at Elmendorf and loves it.

  • Im in Alaska now. It depends what youre into as to what youll think of it and also where he is getting stationed.. Im trying to think of it as trying to experience new and different things while Im here because I cannot see us coming back after we leave. But I dont hate it and I dont love it all the time but just experiencing things that I will only experience here is neat.
