Visiting Austin for the month of June -- what to do?
I'm working Austin for the month of June, staying in Hyde Park.
I don't really know anyone here. Any recommendations for things to do, places to eat, unique or great places to shop (for anything I could cart home on a plane or would be worth shipping back)? Specifically, things that I wouldn't feel weird doing alone?
I'm 32, from San Francisco, enjoy good food and drinks, being outside, reading... actually pretty much open to anything!
I can see already that I'm going to get lonely and bored sitting here and working all the time...
Re: Visiting Austin for the month of June -- what to do?
South Congress is a really cool part of town - lots of little shops and restaurants to explore (food trucks, too!). If you're looking for some activities, maybe keep an eye out on Groupon for some yoga or craft classes.
Some of my favorite restaurants are Vespaio, South Side Flying Pizza, Trudy's, Magnolia Cafe, Kerbey Lane, Mighty Fine Burgers and Z Tejas. Amy's Ice Cream is also a must!
Definitely hit up Barton Springs Pool. Its a natural spring pool, great atmosphere to sun, swim, and people watch. Just be warned, the water is cooooold! Go down Barton Springs Road afterward and get a snow cone.
You can also take a run or walk around Town Lake. Probably want to do this in the morning before it gets to terribly hot.
Blues on the Green starts up this week. Free music concert at Zilker park every Wed evening. Bob Schneider is this week.
South Congress is great for strolling around and shopping, good food trailers. I also like the shopping around Lamar and 6th.
Food suggestions: Hula Hut (hawaiian/texmex on the lake), Maudies (my fave texmex), Magnolia Cafe (24/7 diner, great breakfast), Odd Duck Farm to Trailer (unique food trailer), Torchys Tacos (awesome unique tacos), Amys Ice Cream (this is a must while you are here! great ice cream)
Many local places have free copies of the Austin Chronicle. Pick one up weekly and it usually has info about stuff going on around town for the week. Have fun!!
Also had to chime in to add a few more ideas:
-- Go somewhere that serves Mexican Martinis. Trudy's (you're close to the central location) or the Cedar Door (downtown) are two places that come to mind.
-- Definitely seconding the Torchy's Tacos suggestion. The potato/egg/cheese and the Democrat are my favorites.
-- Also Kerbey Lane -- love their pancakes (which are way cheap), Kerbey Queso, and the veggie chorizo quesadilla. They have healthy options too, and are open 24 hours. (Fair warning: the service usually leaves something to be desired. That's one of the trademarks of this place that people aren't proud to mention, haha).
-- Curra's (south) or El Chile (east side) are my picks for Mexican/Tex Mex. Awesome salsa, margaritas, mojitos and enchiladas. Try the mole!
-- If you enjoy museums, check out the Blanton Museum of Art at UT.
-- Outside sucks this time of year. Sorry.
But Barton Springs pool is a great place to cool off. If you have the means to travel about 50 miles, I'd also recommend going tubing on the Comal in New Braunfels. You can rent a tube and bring canned beer along for the float, then the tube rental places will drive you back to the starting point if you want to go again!
-- If you don't like Amy's Ice Cream, that's OK...I've always found it to be pretty gummy and bland. They haven't thrown me out of town yet.
But I love the Texas-made Blue Bell Ice Cream you'll find in most grocery stores.
Thanks for the additional recs. I'll have to get eating!
I was actually at the Blanton Museum of Art on Friday, but just grabbed lunch in their museum cafe. I'll have to check out the museum.
And I have a rental car, so I can get out to the tubing place. Sounds fun. Can I bring a mixed drink in a water bottle? I'm not a big beer fan *gasp*.
I relocated from Hyde Park to Downtown on Friday, and spent the weekend wandering around downtown, South Congress, Town Lake. And I saw the bats!
We also went over to San Antonio, saw the Alamo, River Walk, and had great Mexican food at La Tierra in El Mercado.
I didn't have the list of restaurant recs, but had some really good eats and drinks:
Haddington's - their happy hour martini was fantastic. As were their happy hour almonds.
Then went to Second (2nd and Congress, I think) for dinner. Also, fantastic!
Then to Halcyon and had DIY smores.
Also, went to dinner at Maiko Sushi Lounge (looks cheesy from the outside, but was close to my hotel). Their pork udon was phenomenal. It was smoked pork shoulder udon. Like Tex-Japanese! I almost went back today.
My husband arrives this Friday, so I look forward to hitting some spots with intention!
