cleaning dishwasher

What do you use to clean your dishwasher?  I was thinking about trying Finish Dishwasher Cleaner, but I have heard that using white vinegar also works?  My dishwasher isn't really that bad, as I'm a freak about making sure that my dishes are thoroughly rinsed before putting them in the dishwasher.  But, I figured it can't hurt to give it a good cleaning treatment every once in awhile.  So what do you do to clean your dishwasher??  Thanks :)

Re: cleaning dishwasher

  • About every other month or so on an empty cycle I pour baking soda all over the dishwasher, add a ton of vinegar and run an empty sanitize cycle. Works like a charm.

Once a year I run and empty cycle with bleach in the compartments. "They" say bleach is bad for dishwashers, but my repair guy said as long as I didn't make it a habit it does work good. Not something you want to do all the time though.

I've also heard orange tang in the compartment on an empty cycle also does a great job. I've never tried though.

  • I have also used the vinegar/baking soda combo. I pour baking soda all over and put the vinegar in a cup on the top shelf and run the cycle. Looks great afterwards :)
  • I just toss some straight white vinegar in and run a cycle. It makes it so the dishes don't get the white spots on them.

Otherwise, I don't think it needs to be washed. It more or less washes itself.

  • A scoop of powdered lemonade once a month.  I heard of this in a newspaper column years ago and it works.  I buy the store brand for pennies and it lasts a year to 18 months.  The acid in the lemon scours the inside of the dishwasher and it is totally food safe.

  • Lemishine, but I end up using it in every wash cycle.

Is your dishwasher tub plastic or stainless?

Ours is plastic and I just fill the soap cups up with powder Tang and run a regular cycle.

If it's stainless (my mom's is), fill a bowl with lemon juice and set it on the top rack. Run a cycle through. It will be sparkling.
