sex after diagnosis

My fiance and i have been together for 3 1/2 years, engaged for a year. When we first started dating we had a lot of sex....not a lot of great sex but a lot of sex. Then we moved in together and soon after moving in I started showing symptoms...some rather unattractive symptoms at that. I started getting really sick, tired all the time and kept becoming more and more anemic. I went to three different doctors in 2 years and went to the ER even more and everyone refused to treat or diagnose me. Theyd run a test or two then shove a round of pills that wouldnt help and tell me to leave. Finally my iron dropped to dangerously low to the point of needing a blood transfusion and was admitted into the hospital for a week. Through it all I kept my head held high and stayed as close to optimistic as i could and my fiance loved that about me. Our sex life deminished and he stopped initiating because I was so sick and he wanted to respect that. Finally after it was all said and done with a diagnosis came back.  have crohns disease, was given a round of medication and now see a doctor regularly. Im starting to feel better even though I have my good and bad days and after much talk were getting back to having regular sex. The problem is it burns, it doesnt burn when he does oral on me but when he sticks anything in whether it be a finger or anything else it burns. Im allergic to condoms so weve never used them(I have an IUD) I try to ignor the pain but its so annoying, I dont know what to do...Any advice?

Re: sex after diagnosis

  • What slays me about your story:

Not one physician or health care practitioner ever got to the bottom of your problem when you first reported your symptoms. Meanwhile, your life was depending upon the diagnosis and a rapid diagnosis, at that.

How tough is it to run a bunch of routine blood tests and get a patient history and then conduct a thorough physical exam?

A friend of mine has had Crohn's for years -- he swears by acupuncture and hasn't had a flare up in a very very long time. He's active, he does sports broadcasting, he keeps busy; you'd never be able to tell he has a medical problem.

There are also support groups for your condition -- the Crohn's people are located in NYC; I believe their website will also be of great help to you. Tons of resources.

A support group would help your H also --- it can be difficult for somebody with a loved one with a chronic disease.

See a gyn about the burning; you might have intervestibular cystitis or another condition.

I went thorugh almost the same mess as you did last year, but for another condition. I wound up seeing 5 docs until one got down to the bottom of what was going on.  And I also have a chronic condition and indeed it can be rough -- it's always a day to day kind of thing. One day you'll feel great and another day you may not feel like doing much of anything.

    Feel better soon. HTH.

  • OP- I'm sorry about the burning during sex. Have you asked your doc if it is a possible side-effect of any medication you are on? Are you using any particular type of lubrication that could be causing it?

I would definitely see your gyno about the burning during sex. There could be some other kind of infection or something going on. I really hope that it gets better for you, and I'm sorry to hear about your Crohn's Diagnosis.

A teacher friend of mine also has C's disease. She also swears by acupuncture.
