Does anyone here work 2 jobs? How do you balance them?
I have a day job (main job) that I like. Travel wasn't discussed and I'm being told I'll be travelling for the majority of the summer. Including weekends. No overtime and no days off in lieu. I'll be missing my cousins wedding, a trip planned with friends that's already been paid for and non-refundable and a few other things.
I have a second job (part time) that I LOVE. I teach fitness. If I miss more than 2 classes in a session, the entire 4 or 6 week session will be taken from me as it's not fair to the students to have multiple instructors. I would basically lose my classes and possibly not have a job when I return from traveling.
How do you balance them when one job will affect the other in a negative way?
Re: Lurker question - 2 jobs
Ideally this is what I would love to do, but the pay cut is huge in comparison and we can't afford it right now. Hence job#1.
My fitness job is part time only. 2 nights a week. There's no way to turn it into a full time job at the moment because there is only one place where I live that offers my classes.
My plans in the future is to work towards fitness by getting more certifications and expand myself but right now that's difficult to do. It will be a long term plan.

I work two jobs. I work as a long term substitute at a child care center as an aide to a 5 yr old girl with social/emotional special needs and one day a month I substitute at a school district as a Para-Educator. I want to be a Para. That's my dream job. I've been a substitute at both places for almost two years. I'd rather not work at the child care center because my boss don't treat me very well but I love my coworkers yet they give me more hours than the school district. The aide position is from March-August of this year. Before that I was on call for both jobs.
For 9 months before I got married I worked three jobs. Before and after school care from 7am-8:30am/3:00pm-6:30pm, aide in a kindergarten class from 9:00am-11:30am and a substitute at a child care center from 12:00pm-2:00/2:30pm. And I planned my wedding.
I'd quit my job at the child care center if it interfered with my job at the school district because to me it's about priorities in my career. Fortunately they work with me. It sounds to me like you should quit job #1 if possible. GL!
I wouldn't feel bad about job #2 because they know you work fulltime already. However I wouldn't let job #1 push you around like that. I would want to discuss travel if it wasn't discussed when I got hired. and I would never be forced to do it esp without a pay raise.
Thanks for the advice.
I've booked a meeting with Job#1 boss to discuss
