What do to about mosquitos?
I realize this is an issue for most of us, as DC is a swamp, and am hoping someone has a solution!
We bought a house with a yard specifically so we could hang out outside, but I loathe spending time out there because I get so bitten up (and DD had what look like welts on her arms and legs from bites!). Is my only solution to spray every time we go outside? Put tiki torches with citronella all over the yard? Does anyone get a company that comes to spray? Does that work?
Thanks!
Re: What do to about mosquitos?
We have tiki torches and citronella candles, we also have a coil under our deck table.
This summer I bought Cutter backyard bug control. It's a concentration solution and you attach it to your hose, and you hose down your whole yard. I didn't think it would work, but it has cut down mosquito attacks by at least 1/2. You can get it at home depot, and it's like $10 or $15.
It rained the day after I sprayed, so that might have something to do with it's effectiveness... I plan on re-spraying again this week.

The problem is that part of our backyard includes a FFX county drain, so there is standing water more often than not, and there's nothing we can do about it. It's a fair distance from the house, but still probably close enough that it's part of the problem.
I'll look into Cutter, though, since it sounds like that's pretty effective!
Thanks!
I agree about the Cutter backyard. They have one in an aresole can that you can spray about 15 mintues before being outside which is supposed to help. Also what about gettng a bug zapper. It's the thing you attache that attracks bugs to the light and kills them on contact.
We do the Cutter that you attach to a hose. Make sure to spray everything green. We spray the grass, bushes, low hanging tree limbs. It tends to last for about 2 or 3 weeks and then you need to respray again - assuming it doesn't rain right after you spray.
We also use Citronella candles on our deck.
I tried the little fan that you clip to you last year made by Off. It did seem to work, but was annoying.
A long term alternative would be to put up purple martin or bat houses to try to attract natural predators. Our area is so congested that you may not have luck with the purple martins though.
Mosquitos can't fly near fans (they're too lightweight) so could put some fans outside while you're out there. You'll probably look crazy - but it does keep bugs away. My parents do it for outdoor parties.
As for the propane things - a friend's dad got the "Mosquito Deleto" and it was the biggest waste of money. There were mosquitos landing on the actual machine itself. lol.

We did the yard spray, but not Cutter. I forget the name of the brand we used, but it's not supposed to hurt the environment and kids and pets are able to go into the yard. I bought it at Home Depot.
We also did the Off lantern, and had cans of Off mosquito repellent. I think body spray is the simplest way to not get bitten!

Our neighbors had a BBQ over Memorial Day weekend, and we didn't realize until we got home that not of us got a bite. We called them and it turns out they get a treatment about every three weeks from Mosquito Authority. They said it works wonderfully - that it doesn't get rid of every single mosquito, but it's allowed them to enjoy their back yard again. We have a giant deck on the back of our house that we usually can't enjoy in the evenings (dusk = prime mosquito time), so we're considering this. They also have three little kids like us, and it's supposedly kid/pet safe (made from some sort of plant or something?)
