Allergies

Is it just me or is this year HORRIBLE for allergies? What do you take for them? I have been miserable for the last few weeks with itchy eyes, nose and throat and sneezing. The last week or so I wake up in the middle of the night and have sneezing fits. WTH is going on?

Re: Allergies

  • My DH has horrible allergies year round but right now they are much worse than usual.  He becomes immune to the medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, etc... after a while so he just takes Benedryl (the generic brand from Sam's Club) and he takes a LOT of it.

  • mine were fine until I mentioned that they were fine. Now they are out of control. I was taking generic Zyrtec, but that wasn't working, so I switched to Benadryl (for allergies) and it seems to be working much better. However, it is a every 6-8 hour thing and I forget to take it sometimes and get really bad!

  • Mine were really bad until I switched from taking Claritan to Zyrtec.  I think my body got used tot he Claritan.  I also tried Allegra. It worked better than Claritan but not quite as good as Zyrtec.

If this is the case then he can talk to his doctor about Xyzal.  It is an expensive medication that health insurance doesn't want to cover unless all other common pills have been tried.  So usually they want some proof of that from the doctor before they will cover it.

  • You can see in mcvay's link that I asked this question a couple weeks ago.  Fortunately mine finally got better, but I was absolutely miserable for at least a week.  Nothing was helping mine at all.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to tell DH to talk about that option with his doctor.

  • I have really bad allergies but I've been able to keep them relatively well controlled this year...so far.

I take two of the 24hr (generic) Zyrtec every day plus a nasal spray in the morning, I also have an extra pill for breakthrough itching for those times it gets really bad but I've only needed that a couple times this year.

  • Mine have been terrible for the last few years!! Before that I swear I hardly ever had a problem.  All I can really take right now is Benadryl, which really doesn't seem to help but I take it anyway in case it decides to start working.
