Info on the area near Cary, NC

Hello!  I'm Rebecca, currently living in StL, Mo.

DH is applying to a couple of jobs in the Cary/Raleigh area & I need some info.

We have 2 young girls (Ella & Audrey), so I'm hoping to find out what the best schools are in the area.  I come from a larger school district here in St Louis (high school classes of around 2000) but I don't know what the school system is like in NC.  Any suggestions or good websites for me to visit?

We would be looking for a hopefully quieter, family neighborhood with sidewalks & parks & bike paths (all things we're lacking in our current house!).  Any neighborhood/street/suburb suggestions?

Right now, commuting is not that huge of a deal for us - DH works from home right now, but his commute is 45+ min if he does go in.

Any other important information to know when checking out the area?

Thank you so much, ladies!  Hope you are all surviving the heat!

Re: Info on the area near Cary, NC

  • We live in Cary and we really like it.  In general Wake county schools are pretty good...although under a lot of heat lately.  They tend to redo their zones fairly often so I've heard a lot of people complain that their children were in one school and ended up switched to another the next year.  Also the majority of Wake county is on a year round school calendar.

There are a lot of great neighborhoods in the area, especially for families.  I'm not sure about the COL in St. Louis, but Cary tends to be on the high end for the Triangle area.   Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs are also great areas in the near vicinity.

Traffic/commuting here isn't awful.  I drive from Cary to Durham for work.  It takes me about 25 minutes to get there, and with traffic about 45 to get home.

My advice to you would be to come explore the area.  I also would encourage you to rent for a little while before buying a home so that you can make sure of which area you would like to be in.

We moved here from WV and we absolutely love it here.

  • I lived in the area for about 5 years and DH and I plan to move back in about 7ish years. I lived near NC State's campus for the first 4 years, then I moved to Cary for my senior year of college. I really liked it. If I were to buy, I probably wouldn't buy in Cary though. I would be more likely to buy in Apex or Holly Springs. Mostly because of cost. They're very nice areas. With that said, I haven't compared schools at all. Holly Glen in Holly Springs is really nice, but I have no idea what the price range is there. HTH.
  • We've lived in Cary since moving to the area from Boston 7 years ago.  We started off living in the Preston area of Cary and eventually bought in west Cary, closer to Apex where there is a ton of new development.  Everyone warned us that Cary had a high cost of living and high taxes and all that but I think that's all relative.  If you're moving here from any major metro area (STL included of course) you will not bat an eye at Cary prices or taxes.  Depending on where your DH will work, I think you'll find Cary to be incredibly central to almost everything.  In west Cary where we are, we are 15 minutes on back roads to RTP, 20 minutes to RDU, 25 minutes to Chapel Hill, Durham and downtown Raleigh.  School system is one of the best in the area but definitely constantly in transition these days.  Virtually all of the developments in Cary are family havens.  Every neighborhood around us has a neighborhood club house and pool, pike baths, wide sidewalks, etc.  It's a fantastic place to raise a family I think.  Super family friendly.  You can get the most for your money out in the Davis Drive/Morrisville Pkwy/Green Level area.  Hope that helps!
  • I'm going to send you a PM.
