what things tipped you off to drew's food allergies? and are they allergies or sensitivities - is there a difference?

samantha is fine on breastmilk. i don't restrict what i eat - strawberries, nuts, shellfish - and she is fine.

she got her fingers into some frosting, and broke out in hives. went away pretty quickly. dr. trigg said not to worry - get some benadryl kids just in case and don't give her strawberries until 1 year. the cake had strawberry/blueberry filling, but the frosting didn't.

last night, i started her on yogurt. we tried yo baby banana flavored yogurt. she loved it. within a few minutes, she had red blotches on her face. so we stopped at about 3/4 of the way thru.

by the time she went to sleep, the red was mostly gone.

it doesn't seem to constrict her throat, but she is showing hives.

she has had consistent weight gain, but it's very small every month. she was born at 8lbs, and 7 mos later is 14lbs, 10.5oz. she gained 1lb last month and it was her largest leap yet. she generally gained a half pound or just a little less per month. i don't know if her weight is related to this. she nurses often, and has been doing fine on purees.

she does have eczema. everything i've read seems to point to a connection between eczema and food sensitivities too.

because you had issues with food and this same office, i was just looking for your perspective.

  • FWIW, Dr. Triggs is the one who was "treating" us when the allergic reactions started and it never crossed her mind. Then it was Lerche, who was just an insensitive ass.

He has a full dairy and soy allergy (which is a laundry list of ingredients). Not just sensitivity, lactose or protein allergy. But he also does not react to my breastmilk. I do not eliminate anything from diet. I would have if I knew i'd be nursing this long, but that's another whole story.

His reactions are persistent vomiting until he's just dry heaving and hives/welts where the allergen has come in contact with his skin. Mucosy poops, eczema and sometimes diarrhea.Other symptoms are blood in the poops, stuffy nose, wheezing and discomfort.

Since he's been diagnosed, we've had several incidences of him coming in contact with something that gives him huge hives/welts. Once it was white flour from him playing with the measuring cup. The cross contamination from the factory triggered it. Another time was my straw from iced coffee. Another time my empty coffee mug. Recently, macaroni salad. Its almost instant. If something is questionable, I test it on his leg. Frosting definitely has ingreds that is in the dairy family.

Allergies like this is not something that is easily diagnosed. It's lots of trial and error and eliminations. It can't hurt to take her to an allergist. She is old enough to get the skin test and it will give you a clearer and quicker answer.

As for her weight gain, this could all be attributed to an allergy. When you are ingesting something that you are allergic to (your milk contains trace amounts of what your eating), it interferes with nutrient absorption in her body and resulting in low weight gain.

We see Dr. Bosso in West Nyack. He's ehh. I dont love him. I hope all this made sense and I didnt just ramble on too much. If you have any other questions just let me know. I'll cross my fingers she does NOT have any allergies. Allergies in kids is SO hard.

  • thank you - i really need to look in to this Sad
