Moms: tell me you dont do this

Lets assume you're a SAHM....some of you are....do you wake your kid up if he/she is sleeping in the mornings?

I dont understand this....the people I nanny for wake their kid up every single day if he doesnt get up on his own. Today, he was sleeping when I got here and dad opened the door to his bedroom and left it open. WHY? I can see waking them up if you have somewhere to be or its 11 in the morning and the kid is still asleep. But waking a kid up at 7 just because? It makes no sense to me. If the kid is still sleeping, obviously he needs to sleep so why not just leave him be? Also, waking him up = crabby, whiney day for the caregiver. It makes the day so much harder on both of us.

I dont understand waking him up for no reason.

  • I don't understand it either, but I have a kid that hates to sleep, so I would NEVER think of waking him up when he is actually sleeping, haha.

I do know that some people that are sticklers about their sleep schedule do this because some of the "sleep experts" say that that it is important for the baby/child to go down at the same time each day at night and up at the same time each day, and the same thing with naps.  So maybe they are doing it because of that?

  • I completely agree. Especially at his age. I had to wake Nate up at 9a the other day bc my boobs were gonna fall off and he had been sleeping for 12 hours. I knew if I pumped he'd wake up and I'd have nothing left for him lol. I watched a family over the summer and they would wake the kids up too. Always drove me crazy bc they would be ridiculous until about 10am.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

This would make sense except for the fact that he doesnt go to bed at the same time each night. There are times when they're out until 9 or later for dinner and he's not going to bed until they get home. Or if there's relatives visiting, he'll go to bed late or not take a nap at all. Its so weird.

Oh yeah, they definitely don't seem too caught up with their sleep schedule if they keep them up at night sometimes.  I don't know, but waking up a baby/kid never seems like a good idea because they are always crabby!  I am crabby when I am woken up earlier than I would like so that makes sense.  ;)

I'm not a mom, so I probably shouldn't answer this...

But isn't there something to be said for a schedule? Like, kid goes to bed at 8pm, wakes at 7am, takes a nap at 2pm....

Also...I would imagine that if the kiddo slept in till 11am, that he might not want to go to bed that night until 10 or 11pm....which could potentially wreak havoc on the working parent's schedule (or in this case both parents). I would think rested/happier parents= (for the most part) happier child.

Feel free to discount me. Or tell me I'm being selfish because it almost sounds like I'm putting the parents needs ahead of the childs (I'm definitely not trying to do this! though it may sound like it).....this is just one of those things that I don't know much about and am guessing-based on the "expert" opinions I have read on TB :) haha

Oh yes, schedules can definitely be good!  Parker has a schedule, he goes down at night around 7-7:15pm and wakes for the morning around 6:45a-7:15aam(he still nurses once a night in between), and his naps(even though they are super short) are around 10 and 2 each day.  The thing is, he set this schedule for himself, and it isn't perfectly consistent.  If it is near 10 and he isn't showing any tired signs, we wait a bit. And if he wakes up one day at 6:30 or sleeps later until 7:30, we just go with it.  You just have to have a balance I think, and know that schedules can take a while to form.  :)

    Hahaha.... schedules....

Sami goes to sleep between 7-8pm at night, wakes up between 5-6am, falls asleep for another hour after that, and then anything else is a free-for-all... my daughter HATES napping, so any sleep she gets in I openly welcome.  In NO way can I imagine waking her up without purpose.  That's just asking to have a miserable day.

I didn't know Sammi was another non-napper!  UGH!  Parker does 2 20-25 minute naps a day, on a good day.

OMG, it's ridiculous.  I don't know if it's because she thinks she's going to miss out on something or what, but I don't think I've ever seen a child fight sleep so much...

Haha, I wonder the same thing.  That sucks it is so hard to get her down sometimes, that must be exhausting!

  • Heck no, man. The only time we ever wake her up is if we have somewhere to be. Otherwise, we let her sleep however much she needs to.

I dont think you read my post very carefully. He's not sleeping until 11. EVER. The latest he's slept when I'm here is 8:30. And obviously I'd never let him sleep that late (unless he's sick, then he sleeps when he needs to). And yea, I'm sure it does mess up the parent's schedule but so does keeping your kid out until 10pm. So if you're out until 10 the night before and your kid isnt going to sleep until 10:30 at the earliest, yet you're waking him up before 7 and you dont want him napping until the afternoon? Hell to the no, he's going to be so crabby, not to mention he's going to sleep later because he's exhausted making the rest of the night awful. Honestly, it seems rude to the person that's caring for your kid. You're not taking into consideration that he's going to bed super late, waking up early and then he's being a terror for the caregiver. Why do that to your kid or your nanny?

I would NEVER wake Charlotte up unless she has been sleeping in the afternoon for hours and needs to wake up to eat and keep from not sleeping at night. She is not a good sleeper- We just started her in her own room and I am hoping we get into a routine because right now no one in our house is sleeping.
