WWYD? Dining room to office

We are having some issues deciding where to put the nursery.  My office is currently across the hall from our bedroom.  Upstairs is SS's room and H's studio.  We originally thought to put the nursery upstairs and moving his studio in with my office downstairs.  I don't think sharing an office is going to work.  So... we have our dining room which we never use.  We could easily put my office in there and use my office I have now for the nursery.  The only down side is, we wouldn't have a table to eat at.  The kitchen isn't big enough for one and generally we eat on the couch.

We could put the table out on the porch, but that would definitely involve installing an AC/heat unit because it gets mighty hot/chilly out there.

So, would you miss your dinner table?

Re: WWYD? Dining room to office

  • How often do you entertain? Do you ever have family over for Holidays?

I can see it possibly working short term, but for me, I wouldn't do it.

  • We have people over every now and then but I think we have used the table twice in 6 months.  Usually we eat outside or in the living room because there are so many people over.

I think I would miss my table too, but it seems like such a waste to just have it unused 99% of the time.

  • Well.. How long would it take you to heat/cool the outside area? Did you say whether or not it was enclosed?

  • It is enclosed.  There is a fireplace in there but the walls are windows so it gets really hot and really cold.  I don't think it would take long to heat it up/cool it down if we intended to use it for a dinner or something.

  • Could you push the table against the wall or maybe use the table in your office? That way it's still readily availae if you need it.

  • As long as its something you can live with, then go for it!

The dining room isn't big enough for both my desk and the table.  And, then I would really have to keep my desk tidy in case we had people over for dinner.

Meh.  I think the table going into the porch will work out okay.  We have a loveseat our there now, but we can move that into the dining room I guess.  This is really bothering me.  I'm so lame.

I work from home, so my office is my office.  Therefore a cubby wont work.  :(

Gotcha. We have an office set up and all I ever do is sit on the couch to use my computer. Total waste of space for me. If you don't use the DR that much, go for it.

  • Here is the porch I am referring to.

  • You could always get the outdoor Roman shades to cover those windows for more efficiency and/or tint the windows. It's a pretty space, I would love to entertain there if it was comfortable temperature wise!

Oh!  Duh!  Good point!  I think it is very cozy out there and it has a lot of character and charm.  I think I am going to run this plan by my H tonight.  The best part is that when we grill out, people can be "together" for the most part and don't have to walk through the garage or the family room to get to the kitchen.

Thanks for talking through my crazy.  lol

No problem. You'll have to post pics if you make any changes and of course, the nursery too!

I will.  I'm excited now.  I think this is the best solution for us.  H gets to keep his studio, the baby will be right across the hall from our bedroom and I get to keep my table for Thanksgiving.  (I'm hosting this year, or at least that was the plan before I was going to be 8 months pregnant.)

  • I'd definitely put the table out on the enclosed patio.  It's really pretty, so when you do entertain and need it, it's a nice, large space.  Until you are able to get an HVAC system out there, you could get a portable one that's not too expensive.  In fact, I have one, but I'd have to check if it has heat, I don't remember.  I'm sure I could offer you a sweet deal.  Plus, the nursery being across the hall will probably be the most convenient location.
  • I don't know if we will get HVAC out there but we did look at some heat/ac window type units that we can install in a window over one of the doors so it is kind of out of sight but still functional.  The ceiling fan does wonders as well.  Besides, who doesn't want to eat a holiday dinner in front of a beautiful fireplace?  Right?  Ha!

Right!  We barely run heat in our house.  We mainly use the fireplace.  We love it!

  • Sounds like a great plan! You patio/Florida room is very pretty. I would kill for an outdoor entertaining area.

We don't use it right now because all the old doors from the house are stacked out there and it gets ungodly hot.  That and I have been too dang tired to even think about having people over.
