OMG...I hit a bicyclist

I was on my way to the post office during my lunch.  I had a green light and was going straight.  Then out of the corner of my left eye I see a bicyclist.  She screamed but it was too late I hit her.  F**K!  I stopped and got out of the got.  She was lying in the middle of the intersection.  There was a car next to me she had a red light because she was going to turn.  She tells me that it was not my fault, the cyclist ran a red light.

The poor girl that I hit must have been in her late teens.  Thank god that I didn't kill her.  All I know was that she was in pain.  I heard someone say that her leg was broken.  I feel just awful about what happened.  I shouldn't have gone to the post office today.

I don't even know what kind of trouble I'm going to get into.  I had the right of way because my light was green.  I called AAA and filed a claim.  I don't know what is going to happen to her medical bills.  Am I going to be responsible?  It might be too early to tell.  I don't know what is going to happen.

  • Deep breath and let claims handle it. Around here bicycles have the same rules that cars do, so she'd be at fault. Were the cops called? They will take a report and take statements from witnesses.
  • Oh, Deb.  So sorry this happened to you!  Just relax and let the claims process run it's course.  I'm assuming the cops showed up to take statements and from your story it sounds like you already have one witness who could vouch that you had a green light and the right of way if needed.  You will be alright; don't worry.

Deb, I am so sorry you're going through this.  I agree with others, just wait for claims to take its course.  The cynical, lawyer side of me would tell you not to talk to the bicyclist.  People can really misinterpret things like "I'm sorry" as an admission of guilt, when it sounds like you did nothing wrong.

Definitely breathe, though.  AAA will take care of everything.  And have a margarita and a hot bath or something tonight!

  • Oh Deb, that really sucks, I'm sorry.  Hopefully by now you're in the process of getting this taken care of.  Here too, cyclists have same rules as vehicles, so it sounds like you should be fine.  Good luck, sending good vibes your way! *hugs*
  • omg hun!!  Sending hugs your way!

  • Wowie.  Sorry you had such a crappy experience.  Like everyone else has said bikes have the same rules as drivers.  You should be okay legal wise.  Just relax and try to stay calm.  *hugs*

  • So sorry to hear Deb.. I too hit a bicyclist a few years back. It was a kid though, no helmet, not following the traffic signs either. I had green, they had red. Luckily, the kid got up. He did speed off before I could even contact the police, but I did once I got home to just report it incase anybody else had called and done the same. Fortunately for me, nothing ever came out of it. Best of luck... I'm pretty sure the laws for cars and bikes are the same so she should be at fault!

  • Thanks guys.  I've calmed down but can't keep thinking about the accident.  If I hadn't gone to the Post Office, or if I had taken a different route this wouldn't have happened.

I keep thinking about the girl.  I hope that she's okay.  Please send T&P her way too.
