so we just recieved a flyer for "block meeting"
"election of treasury
election of secretary
block cleaning"
"painting of homes in block, pottery, etc: please bring suggestions."
um dear block we are pretty sure we are moving off of you within the next year (don't worry kids still staying in the city), but in the meantime i am not helping out with painting any of your homes or teaching you about pottery. and i am certainly not contributing money. not sure i will go to this meeting but lord help me if i do.
Re: block elections?
We have block meetings a few times each year (to talk about any issues, set dates for block parties, welcome new neighbors, etc.) We do block cleanings every month or more often if needed. I love that we do this...even the guy who sits on his stoop with Milwaukee's Best everyday at 7am, helps clean. It's kind of nice!
it is no secret that I am not enamored with my block, but I still go to the (infrequent) meetings and I still contribute my energy to 'helping' the block as best I can (mostly by picking up trash).
Even though I would like to leave my block, I would maintain an interest in keeping it up, whether I was leaving in a month or a year. I am kinda surprised Lachute that you don't have a more optimistic view, no matter your distaste for the neighbors. Maybe the topic of painting houses is just to encourage people to do so, not to ask people to get up on a ladder or pay for paint for someone. I dunno. This city needs people to care about their blocks. desperately.
i am totally cynical about my block right now (i can fully admit this). it took a major step back recently & it made me remember i live in a no snitch neighborhood, so i am sour.
ha! we are lucky in the fact that most of the time the neighbors aren't loud outside. although saturday morning three houses down was kicking her husband out i've called the cops on them before when we first moved in while fighting. it is one thing to scream at each other but the minute you are fighting and i hear your kids wailing, 3 homes away, i don't feel comfortable and will call the cops.
