I'm happy to share some shade loving perennials if anyone is interested.  I have a variety.

Re: speaking of plants...

  • The front of my house is in desperate need of plants but it gets sun all afternoon.

One of these days we'll put in landscaping. It only took us 7 years to get a front walkway!

  • Just curious -- what shade plants do you have?  It's too far for me to travel, but I'm looking for ideas.  I have Sweet Tea, Astilbe, Begonias, Bunch Berries, Bear's Breetches, Hostas, and Salvia so far.

Too many to list all, but here's some... some are full shade, some part sun.  All grow here.

Maybe 5 different astilbe, 5 different hosta, yarrow, 3 different ajuga, coral bells, lady's mantle, 4 different kinds of mint, japanese sun flowers, coral bells, lamb's ears, 2 different soloman seel, gooseneck loosestrife, shasta daisy, black eyed susan, 2 different bleeding heart, corilas, lupine, many different kinds of daylilies, some lilies, 2 different phlox, many different creeping phlox, creeping jenny, creeping thyme, savory, thyme, chives, turtlehead, many different irises, spiderwort, jacob's ladder, creeping and regular seedum, purple and white cornflower, anemone, 3 types of columbine, marguerite, mountain bluet, globe flower, blazing star, four oclocks, hens and chicks, violets, oodles of ferns....different kinds, etc etc etc.  Plus more. I can't even think of it all.  I know there's more than that...not everything is ready to share, but much of it is.  If you're up this way, swing buy and I can load you up.

I'm around most evenings after 3.  I'm home on Sundays all day too.  Are we friends on facebook (Jackie Lipsky)?  We can set up that way.

  • I could use some help too....  All I can grow in my super shady yard is moss!  Sad  At least it's green, ugh.

Our small yard is lined with giant maple trees, which block 99% of the sun and also drop their seeds and try to spread to what's left of the yard.  AND, I hate gardening, and have no clue, to be honest.

  • ooooh I would love plants for my yard....but I have NO shade. 3 acres in the middle of a field with only a couple small trees.... No shade at all, unfortunately. :(

Holy plants batman!  I've got enough for us to handle right now and may even have some to share.  Jackie - I'm making a mental note to pick your gardening brain!  I have no idea about perennials and am totally learning as we go.  What's a weed, what's not, pruning, etc.  I have no idea when to divide!!!

This is me exactly.  Our small front yard is where I'm experimenting, as most of our backyard is shaded by enormous Norwegian maples and pulling out the wanna-be trees is a PITA.  Our side yard has irises, rhododendrens, azaleas, forsythia, and holly, but they were all planted by the previous owners, so I can't take any credit.  The backyard has more rododendrens, hostas, and azaleas, but I'm trying to get some different stuff.

Jackie, maybe I can convince MH to drive up some Sunday!  I'd love to see your shade garden to get some inspiration! :)

  • All are welcome!  Maybe I should host a plant GTG!  I can't pretend to be an expert..my only claim to fame is the stuff in my yard is growing.  Most all I have is from other people or from the end of year plant sale.  For all of you who have sunny yards, I have lilacs that won't bloom in my shady yard.

I think a plant GTG would be fun; I'd be happy to bring what I have that could be divided to share also.

  • I feel like I somehow missed out on the gene that allows one to understand gardening...I can't even imagine knowing the names of that many plants...I realize how uneducated this sounds!  Especially since my mother always has an amazing garden going...

I don't want to put too much effort in at our apartment here...the front "yard" is extremely small and the landlord comes by with his kid every so often to mow the lawn and I can just see all my hard work being shredded.  I'd love to set up a box of some kind to grow veggies and herbs...I was planning to go to the farmer's market Wednesday to get some plants that are already started.  Any tips in that area?  My experience = successfully having small yellow tomatoes consistently from a potted plant about 5 years ago!

I would love some Lilacs!!! Also, I was looking at your massive plant list and there are some that I actually do already have in my sunny yard...such as the Bleeding Hearts...so I'm guessing they must do well in full sun as well as the partial shade/sun.

A plant GTG would be great. I need to learn about this stuff and what to do with my overgrown flower beds that the previous owners left in my yard.
