Does or has anyone owned any of these SUVs?

B and I have been talking about getting me a new car for some time now. He surprised me tonight and pulled into a Honda dealership so we could test drive The Pilot tonight. I felt so sick to my stomach! I really want a new car but I am enjoying not having a car payment.

We are considering the Honda Pilot, GMC Arcadia, and the Chevy Traverse. Does anyone have any rants/raves about these vehicles?? Or any other 3rd row SUVs? I need something with 4WD and prefer a 3rd row. I hope that some day in the future it will be my mom mobile and I am so not a mini van person.

TIA!

  • I've only heard great things about the Honda Pilot. First of all, I love Hondas and think they last forever (I drive an Acura) and my coworker and another friend both drive Pilots and love them...I think they are a great size. I'd like one. DH and I both love Nissan Xterras...we have to find an SUV once we're back in AK that's semi affordable but has good towing capacity though and I'm not sure about either one of those.

Don't know anything about the other two...good luck!

  • We've got a Pilot (we got in Aug '08-- so it's been a couple of years, but still feels 'new' to me :)).  Anyway, very pleased w/ it... it's comfy for long trips (H is tall and so headroom is important).  While it feels roomy inside, it's actually not THAT big on the outside in terms of parking etc (and trust me, we've driven it in freakin' Florence-- tiny streets).

No maintenance issues that I can think of... well, sometime the tire light comes on when it rains (even through the tires are fine).  This happened since the beginning and so we brought to the dealer and he told us not to worry and showed us how to reset the light/alarm, so no big deal.

It's good on gas milage-- I mean not as good as my trust ol' ('01) Civic, but for an SUV, it's good.  I'd say we can usually get about 3.5hr-4hrs of highway driving from a tank.  Around town's good too.

Finally, I liked the Pilot better than other models we looked at b/c it's "fixtures" (like dashboard, cupholders, sunroof, etc) were better constructed/designed, IMO.  We looked at the Highlander and it's fixtures we're not good AND 3rd seating cost more (was an 'option').  I like the 3rd row (we have filled it up w/ people) although generally we just have two and space for Lucy in the way back.

Anyway, good luck w/ your choice!  Def recommend the Pilot :)!

  • Honda has the best resale value compared to the others listed. Honda cars are made to last. My sister got one and just traded it on after having it from brand new to 130K miles. It was a great car. The new ones are even nicer.

  • Thanks girls. The pilot is number one on my list. I'm just having palpitations on having a car payment again!!

My car is at the shop today. I think it needs new shocks, struts, brakes, and rotters. My personal preference is to fix my car if its not outrageous and keep it for a while longs.

  • Just weighing in my grandma bought a pilot and after driving it my aunt bought one. Now my good friend has one and a few others I know have them.  They are nice I drove my aunt's and will consider that in the next car purchase.

  • I have a 2007 GMC Acadia and LOVE it. 3rd row is great, but we don't use it much. It folds down nicely. Mine has a lot of options, so I don't know whats standard. Trunk opens with the push of a button, heated seats, soooo comfortable! I love my car!

My parents have a Pilot. I tried to send a PM, but don't think it worked. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • I like the GMC Arcadia personally, but I would also recommend the Kia Sorento.  I have one and I love it.  The new ones have 3rd row seats.  They're very safe, solid cars and are made in the US.  Good luck with your search!
