does anyone else think that...

a 2 hour cheer practice is a bit long for 3, 4, and 5 year olds? It was 1 1/2 hours, but they upped the time for the summer and changed it to Monday nights 6-8. Hope she is good and doesnt loose her concentration. They all did at the 1 1/2 hour practices, so we shall see how it goes.

Re: does anyone else think that...

  • Gosh, even 1-1/2 hours seems long to me.  Is this competitive cheerleading for toddlers?

I think 30-45 minutes is plenty long enough for a 3 year old

  • Yes, she's on a competitive squad : ) They start them young at our gym...
  • Yes way to long. B's dance class was for 30 minutes and that would be the max I think. Maybe an hour long but anything longer then that for 3,4,5 yo is to much.

  • Ditto what MC said.

They are kids, let them be kids.  There will be enough 2 hour long practices when she is older.

  • That is WAY to long. One of my students is on a competitive squad and she has practice mon thru friday for two hours in the am. then they have practice for two hours on sat too. i think thats all crazy for kids so young

  • It is only 2 hours per week.....Addie asked to join so I am NOT making her do anything she doesn't want to do. And with the way kids are lazy nowadays only wanting to play video games I will gladly allow my daughter to get in a pyhsical activity if that is what she chooses to do. I just thought it was a little long for a practice at once...and was wondering others thoughts. No need to say I'm not letting my daughter be a little girl.
  • I dunno honestly.  The only things I remember doing that young were gymnastics and swimming...and remember being upset when I couldn't continue with them through childhood (I had a very hard time keeping my room clean and that was the deal).  That said, we are friends with a couple (Merin knows them as well) who have a daughter is in cheer and I think the mom is a wee bit obsessed with it (former high school cheerleader i believe) - she might think two hours a week is nowhere near enough.

  • I don't think anoyone was saying YOU don't let her be a kid. Just that kids will generally lose concentration long before the 2 hours are up. It would make more sense to do 1 hour twice a week, but you gotta take what you can get I guess. I think it's awesome that she asked to do it :o)
  • I didn't want you to take what I said wrong, I didn't mean YOU were not letting her be a kid.

I just meant, what happened to the days of a 30 minute session a week for things like dance, gymnatics, whatever.  She is only 3 years old, it isn't like she is 16, I find it a little much when a place like that expects so much out of such a young child.
